Part 3: The Miracle in the Frost

Inside the freezer, Grace was floating in a dangerous, peaceful warmth—the final, lethal stage of hypothermia where the brain confuses freezing to death with burning up. She had stopped shivering. Her mind was drifting back to her childhood, to warm summer days.

But a violent, agonizing spasm in her abdomen ripped her back to reality.

The contractions were coming back-to-back now. Her body, acting on pure survival instinct, was forcing the babies out. She was completely alone, in pitch blackness, unable to move her legs.

"Please," she whimpered, though no sound came out of her frozen lips.

Suddenly, a loud CLANG reverberated through the steel walls. Then another.

She heard muffled voices outside. Was she hallucinating? Was this the end?

With a deafening explosion of sound, the heavy chains outside shattered. The massive steel door was thrown open, and a blinding flood of yellow warehouse light poured into the icy tomb.

Ethan Vance rushed in, the warm air from his lungs instantly turning to vapor. He scanned the room and saw her—a pale, motionless figure huddled in the corner, covered in a thin layer of frost.

"Grace!" Ethan yelled, dropping to his knees beside her.

He touched her neck. Her skin felt like solid ice, but there was a faint, agonizingly slow pulse. Thump... pause... thump.

"Marcus, call a private medical transport! Tell them to prep a hyperthermic trauma bay at Vance Memorial! Move!" Ethan ordered as he scooped Grace into his arms. She felt dangerously light, her body stiffened by the cold.

As he lifted her, Grace let out a weak, guttural cry, her body convulsing.

Ethan looked down in horror. The fabric of her pale blue dress was soaked in fluid and blood.

"The... the babies," Grace whispered, her eyes opening just a crack, staring at Ethan with a look of absolute, desperate begging. "Save... them."

"I've got you. I've got them," Ethan said, his voice fierce with a determination he hadn't felt in years. He carried her out of the freezer and laid her down on his heavy wool coat on the warehouse floor.

He knew they didn't have time for an ambulance. The hospital was ten minutes away, but the babies were coming now. The extreme cold had pushed Grace’s body to its absolute limit, and the shock of the sudden warmth was accelerating the labor.

"Marcus, cancel the transport! Tell the OBGYN surgical team to meet us at the emergency bay door in ten minutes! We're driving!"

Ethan stripped off his suit jacket, wrapping it around Grace's frozen feet. He took her hands in his, rubbing them vigorously to bring back circulation, though he had to be careful of frostbite.

"Grace, look at me," Ethan commanded gently, his face inches from hers. "You are not going to die here. Your husband is a monster, but you are stronger than him. Push, Grace! You have to push!"

With a final, agonizing scream that tore from her frozen throat, Grace gathered every remaining ounce of her soul. She pushed.

The warehouse was silent except for her ragged breaths, and then, a miracle.

The faint, thin cry of a newborn baby echoed through the empty building.
