Part 7: The True Meaning of Wealth

One year later.
The gardens of the Vance Estate were ablaze with summer flowers. The air was warm, sweet, and filled with the sound of childish giggles.
Grace sat on a blanket on the lush green grass, watching her one-year-old twins, Liam and Maya, crawl frantically toward a golden retriever puppy that was happily wagging its tail. Grace looked radiant. The pale, terrified woman from the freezer was gone, replaced by a confident, glowing mother whose laughter was frequent and light.
She had spent the last year healing, both physically and emotionally. With Ethan’s support, she had started a non-profit foundation to help women escaping domestic and financial abuse. She was no longer a victim; she was a protector.
A shadow fell over the blanket, and Grace looked up to see Ethan walking toward them. He had discarded his tie, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a rare, relaxed smile on his face.
"Look who’s walking," Ethan said, catching Liam just as the little boy made a clumsy, excited dash toward his legs. Ethan lifted the boy high into the air, making him squeal with delight, before settling him on his hip.
Maya immediately protested, pulling at Ethan’s trousers until he leaned down and scooped her up too, balancing both toddlers with practiced ease.
Grace watched them, her heart swelling with a profound sense of peace. Over the past year, Ethan hadn't just provided a roof over their heads; he had become the emotional anchor of their lives. He was there for the late-night fevers, the first teeth, the first steps. He loved the twins as if they were his own flesh and blood.
"You're late today," Grace teased, standing up and brushing off her sundress.
"The board of directors wanted to argue about a new acquisition," Ethan said, stepping closer to her, his gaze dropping to her lips. "But I told them I had far more important business at home."
"Oh? And what business is that?"
Ethan set the twins down on the blanket with the puppy and turned fully to Grace. He took both of her hands in his—hands that were now warm, healthy, and completely healed.
"Grace, the day I pulled you out of that freezer, I thought I was just doing the right thing," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a serious, deeply emotional tone. "But over the past year, watching you rebuild your life, watching you love these children, you’ve saved me too. You showed me that wealth isn't about what's in my bank account. It's about what's in this yard right now."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box. He flipped it open to reveal a stunning, flawless diamond ring that caught the afternoon sunlight.
"Grace Bennett, I love you. I love Liam, and I love Maya. I want to protect you for the rest of your life—not as a promise made in the dark, but as a reality lived in the light. Will you marry me?"
