Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM FIRE

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of black ties, silk dresses, and crystal chandeliers.
Over three hundred of New York’s most elite corporate executives, venture capitalists, and tech leaders filled the room for the annual Hayes Innovations Innovation Gala.
Daniel stood near the head table, sipping scotch, basking in the congratulatory handshakes of junior executives who still believed he was the corporate savior of the firm. Victoria stood beside him, glowing under the flashbulbs of society photographers, proudly displaying the five-carat diamond ring on her hand.
At 7:55 PM, a tall man in an Italian suit approached Daniel and whispered into his ear.
"Mr. Mercer. The primary equity owner of Vance Capital has arrived. They are waiting for you in the private VIP suite on the mezzanine floor."
Daniel’s heart hammered against his ribs with excitement. He looked at Victoria, offering her a confident nod.
"Keep the champagne cold, Victoria," Daniel smirked. "I'll be back in five minutes with a signed $2.5 million check."
Daniel walked up the grand velvet staircase to the mezzanine floor, adjusting his cuffs, rehearsing his pitch in his head. He was going to explain how his lazy, stay-at-home wife was jealous of his success, how she had manipulated their joint accounts, and how he was cutting her out of his life to focus entirely on Hayes Innovations.
He reached Suite 402. Two security guards in dark suits stood outside the heavy mahogany doors.
Without knocking, the guards opened the doors for him.
Daniel stepped inside.
The VIP suite was massive, illuminated by soft amber lighting, overlooking the city skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows. Standing near the window, holding a glass of sparkling water, was a tall, elegant woman wearing a custom-tailored white suit, her dark hair styled into a flawless, regal bun.
"Good evening," Daniel said smoothly, putting on his most charming corporate smile as he walked into the room. "I am Daniel Mercer, Senior Vice President of Hayes Innovations. I believe we have some funding paperwork to resolve regarding my $2.5 million facility."
The woman slowly turned around.
Daniel’s smile instantly froze. The color drained from his face so fast he looked as though he had seen a ghost.
"Hello, Daniel," I said softly.
Daniel blinked, taking a step back, looking around the room as if searching for a hidden camera. "Maya?! What the hell are you doing here?! How did you get past security on the mezzanine floor?!"
"I didn't need to get past security, Daniel," I replied, setting my glass down on the marble side table. "They work for me."
"Are you insane?!" Daniel yelled, his panic turning into white-hot rage. "Did you follow me here to make another scene?! I know what you did last night! You canceled the joint account transfer! You tried to ruin my engagement to Victoria!"
"I didn't try to ruin your engagement, Daniel," I said evenly. "You did that yourself when you brought red roses to a woman who wasn't your wife."
"Listen to me, you ignorant idiot!" Daniel hissed, stepping into my space, his face twisted in fury. "You have no idea what is happening tonight! The primary owner of Vance Capital is walking through that door any second! If you don't get your pathetic, jealous ass out of this room right now, I will have security throw you into the street and I'll make sure you don't get a single penny in the divorce!"
The heavy double doors behind Daniel opened again.
My father, Arthur Vance, stepped into the room, followed by my brother Julian and four senior corporate attorneys carrying thick black leather folders.
Daniel turned around, recognizing my father immediately from financial news broadcasts.
"Mr. Vance!" Daniel gasped, his tone instantly shifting into desperate, groveling politeness. "Thank God you're here! Sir, I am Daniel Mercer! I am so honored to finally meet the legendary founder of Vance Capital!"
My father didn't offer his hand. He looked down at Daniel as if he were a cockroach on his shoe.
"Mr. Vance," Daniel stammered, pointing a finger at me. "I am so sorry for this disruption! This woman—my soon-to-be ex-wife—has somehow snuck into your private suite! She is mentally unstable, sir! She’s been trying to sabotage the $2.5 million bridge funding facility because she couldn't handle my success!"
My father looked at Daniel, then looked at me, a cold, terrible smile forming on his lips.
"Daniel," my father said, his voice echoing through the suite like a hammer on an anvil. "Do you know who the primary equity holder and sole managing partner of Vance Capital has been for the last five years?"
Daniel blinked, confused. "What... what do you mean? It's your family trust..."
"My daughter, Maya Vance," Arthur stated clearly. "Owns eighty percent of Vance Capital. The $2.5 million loan you begged for wasn't approved by an anonymous board. It was approved by my daughter, sitting at her kitchen table, trying to help her husband build a career."
Daniel’s knees literally buckled. He grabbed the edge of a velvet armchair to keep from falling to the floor.
"What...?" Daniel whispered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek. "No... no, that's impossible... Maya is a stay-at-home mom! She doesn't have money! She drives a suburban SUV!"
"I drive an SUV because I care about keeping our children safe, Daniel," I said, stepping closer to him, looking down into his terrified, pale eyes. "I let you believe you were the big corporate provider because I loved you. I let you take the credit because I wanted you to feel confident. But you mistook my humility for weakness."
Julian stepped forward, opening a thick leather folder and dropping a stack of legal documents onto the table in front of Daniel.
"These are three formal court filings, Daniel," Julian announced smoothly.
"First: An immediate freeze on all corporate assets and patents registered under Hayes Innovations, under Clause 9 of the primary debt covenant signed by you last year."
"Second: A complete, non-negotiable divorce filing citing adultery and grand financial fraud, accompanied by a full custody petition for Leo and Lily."
"And third," Julian smiled coldly, "a criminal referral to the Securities and Exchange Commission for insider trading, based on the email records we recovered showing you transferred confidential Vance Capital financial projections to Victoria Hayes six months ago."
Daniel stared at the papers, his breathing coming in ragged, terrified gasps. "Maya... please... baby, listen to me..."
He dropped to his knees right there on the marble floor, reaching out to grab the hem of my trousers.
"I was stupid! I was confused! Victoria manipulated me! She forced me into the engagement to save her company! I don't love her, Maya! I love you! You're my wife! We have two children together!"
I pulled my foot back, avoiding his touch as if he were poisonous.
"You didn't think about our children when you kissed another woman in front of the entire company, Daniel," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "You didn't think about Leo when he held that Valentine's card in his hand."

I turned my back on him.
"Julian," I said calmly. "Take him down to the ballroom. It's time to make our announcement to the shareholders."
