Chapter 5 - THE PUBLIC DEMOLITION

Downstairs in the Grand Ballroom, the mood was festive.

Victoria Hayes stood near the stage, surrounded by reporters, board members, and major tech investors. She was holding a microphone, preparing to announce the formal merger that would save her company from bankruptcy.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Victoria announced into the microphone, her voice echoing through the speakers. "Tonight, Hayes Innovations enters a new era of unprecedented growth! Thanks to the strategic leadership of our Senior Vice President, Daniel Mercer, and a $2.5 million capital injection from Vance Capital—"

The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open.

Four uniformed private security guards entered, clearing a wide path down the center aisle.

Behind them walked my father, Arthur Vance, accompanied by Julian, and me.

Behind us, dragged by two security officers, was Daniel. His tux jacket was rumpled, his hair was messy, and his face was pale with utter, ruinous defeat.

The entire ballroom fell completely silent. The flashbulbs stopped. The music cut out.

Victoria stared in horror as the legendary Arthur Vance walked straight toward her stage.

"Mr. Vance!" Victoria stammered, lowering her microphone, trying desperately to smile. "We... we are so honored by your presence tonight! Is this the formal signing of our bridge funding—"

"There is no bridge funding, Ms. Hayes," Arthur Vance announced, his voice carrying across the entire silent hall without the need for a microphone.

Victoria froze. "What... what do you mean?"

Julian stepped onto the stage, pulling out a microphone from his jacket pocket.

"As senior legal counsel for Vance Capital Enterprise," Julian declared to the three hundred executives in the room, "I am officially announcing that all credit lines, debt facilities, and investment agreements between Vance Capital and Hayes Innovations have been permanently terminated for cause."

A collective gasp ripped through the audience. Board members stood up in panic.

"On what grounds?!" Victoria shrieked, her composure shattering into pieces. "You signed the preliminary terms last week!"

"On the grounds of severe corporate fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and illegal insider trading," Julian replied coldly. "Executed by your CEO, Victoria Hayes, and your former Senior Vice President, Daniel Mercer."

Victoria looked down at Daniel, who was sitting on the floor near the steps of the stage, his head in his hands, weeping silently.

"Daniel!" Victoria screamed at him. "What did you do?!"

I walked up the steps of the stage, taking the microphone from my brother's hand.

I looked out at the room—at the journalists, the investors, and the arrogant CEO standing beside me.

"Three hours ago," I said, my voice calm, clear, and ringing with absolute authority, "Daniel Mercer stood on a stage in your corporate lobby and proposed to Victoria Hayes. He offered her a five-carat diamond ring purchased using a joint credit card linked directly to my family's private trust."

Victoria stared at me, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Who... who the hell are you?!"

"I am Maya Vance," I said, looking her straight in the eyes. "Primary owner of Vance Capital. And the woman who just pulled the plug on your company."

Victoria dropped her champagne glass. It shattered against the wooden stage floor, spraying liquid across her silk dress.

"Tonight," I continued, addressing the board of directors sitting at the front tables, "Vance Capital is executing its senior lien on all physical and intellectual assets of Hayes Innovations to recover our prior loans. As of 9:00 PM tonight, Hayes Innovations is insolvent. The company will enter immediate Chapter 11 liquidation under court supervision."

Panic erupted in the ballroom. Investors pulled out their phones, shouting at their brokers. Board members rushed toward the stage, demanding answers.

Victoria fell back into her chair, her hands clutching her head, staring at the shattered glass at her feet. Her company was gone. Her career was over. Her social standing was erased in a single night.

She looked up at Daniel, her eyes filled with pure, murderous hatred.

"You ruined me!" Victoria screamed at him, throwing her engagement ring directly at his face. "You pathetic, lying fraud! Get out of my sight!"

The ring bounced off Daniel’s chest and rolled into the dark corner beneath the stage.

I handed the microphone back to Julian, turned my back on both of them, and walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, flanked by my father and my security team.

I didn't look back once.
