While cleaning out the guest bedroom my sisters had been occupying, I found a small manila folder tucked beneath the mattress. It was labeled with Emily’s name.
Curious, I opened it. Inside were bank statements, legal documents, and a copy of a deed to a property in North Chicago.
My heart stopped. The documents revealed that Emily’s late grandfather had left her a small, independent commercial bakery and a substantial trust fund—nearly $250,000—that was set to mature on her twenty-fifth birthday, which was exactly one week away.
Emily had never told me. Not because she was deceitful, but because when we met, I was struggling, and she wanted to make sure our love was built on who we were, not what we had.
But tucked into the back of the folder was a series of printed text messages. They were from Brittany and Kayla.
“If you tell Ethan about the money, we’ll tell him you're just using him to look like a charity case. We know about your family's past. Pay for our credit card bills, or we’ll make sure Ethan hates you before the baby is born.”
