Chapter 3 - The Iron Grip

By midnight, the district attorney’s office had moved with terrifying speed.
Armed with the raw audio files from Miss Button, the bank transfer logs showing the illegal eighty-four-thousand-dollar withdrawal, and the medical toxicology reports from Dr. Reyes, a municipal judge had signed a comprehensive series of warrants.
Evelyn and Daniel were no longer being held merely for questioning. They were formally charged with attempted premeditated homicide, conspiracy to commit murder, child endangerment, financial fraud, and grand larceny. Because of the interstate nature of my business accounts and the severity of the chemical agents used, federal agencies had also stepped in to review the charges.
I spent the rest of the night sitting in the quiet, dimly lit corner of Clara’s hospital room.
She was still unconscious, resting under an intravenous drip that was slowly flushing the remaining organophosphates from her bloodstream. Her breathing was steady now, though her face remained pale. In the adjoining pediatric recovery ward, Lily was sleeping peacefully under an oxygen tent, her small chest rising and falling regularly. The doctors assured me that thanks to early intervention and the prompt identification of the toxin, both of them would make a full recovery.
As the first pale rays of dawn crept through the hospital window, painting the linoleum floor in soft shades of gold, Clara’s eyelids fluttered.
Her fingers twitched against the white hospital blanket.
“Michael...” her voice rasped, barely a whisper.
I sprang from my chair, dropping to my knees beside the bed and taking her cold hand in mine, pressing it gently against my cheek.
“I’m here, Clara. I’m right here,” I choked out, tears spilling over my lashes. “You’re safe. Lily is safe. I’ve got you.”
Clara slowly opened her eyes, gazing up at me with profound exhaustion, mixed with a sudden, overwhelming wave of relief. “Your mother... she locked the pantry... she said—she said you weren't coming back.”
May you like
“She lied,” I whispered fiercely, pressing kiss after kiss to her knuckles. “She’ll never touch you again. Neither of them will. They’re gone, Clara. They’re locked away, and they’re never stepping foot near our home again.”
A single tear tracked down Clara’s temple, and a weak, trembling smile touched her lips. She closed her eyes again, finally drifting into a deep, peaceful sleep untainted by fear for the first time in years.
