Chapter 5 - Rebuilding

A month later, Clara and Lily were finally back home.

The atmosphere in the house had completely transformed. The heavy, oppressive cloud of fear and surveillance that Evelyn and Daniel had cast over our lives was gone, replaced by the bright, ringing laughter of a six-year-old girl chasing her golden retriever across the living room floor.

We had sold the old furniture, painted the walls in warm, comforting shades of cream and soft blue, and replaced the kitchen entirely.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, I sat at the newly installed dining table, reviewing quarterly project reports for my firm while sipping a cup of coffee.

Lily trotted into the kitchen, holding Miss Button tightly in her arms. The doll’s white dress had been meticulously cleaned and re-stitched by a local seamstress, and the small recording button inside its chest still worked perfectly.

“Daddy, can you play the song button?” Lily asked, holding the toy out to me with a wide, gap-toothed smile.

I smiled, setting my tablet aside, and scooped her up into my lap. I pressed the tiny hidden button inside Miss Button’s hand.

A clear, cheerful recording of my own voice—recorded months ago during a layover in Chicago—filled the quiet room:

“Goodnight, my sweet Lily. Daddy loves you to the moon and back, and I’m always, always right beside you.”

Lily giggled, hugging the doll close to her chest. “You’re right here, Daddy.”

“Always,” I whispered, burying my face in her soft curls.

Across the room, Clara stood leaning against the kitchen counter, holding two mugs of tea. She watched us with a soft, radiant smile that made my heart ache with a profound, unshakable gratitude.

I stood up, carrying Lily on my shoulders, and walked over to Clara, wrapping my free arm securely around her waist and pulling her close against my side.
