Chapter 2 - The South Beach Freeze

The tropical air of South Beach was fifty degrees warmer than Brooklyn, thick with the scent of salt water, expensive cologne, and high-end nightlife.

At 12:10 a.m. on New Year's Day, the VIP terrace of The Nautilus Oceanfront Resort was pulsing with bass from a celebrity DJ set. Soft purple ambient lights reflected off the turquoise waters of the infinity pool, where high-rollers, models, and international tourists were popping multi-thousand-dollar bottles of champagne.

At the best table on the oceanfront deck, Eleanor Collins sat draped in a white silk shawl, wearing a pair of oversized designer sunglasses despite the midnight hour. Beside her, Chloe was live-streaming to her social media followers, holding up a crystal flute of vintage Dom Pérignon. Mark and his brother Ethan were laughing loudly, smoking imported Cuban cigars they had billed directly to the room suite.

"I'm telling you, Mom," Chloe said, turning her phone to capture the sprawling resort behind her. "This was the best idea you’ve ever had. If we had stayed in New York, we’d be sitting in that boring Park Slope apartment listening to Maya complain about her stitches."

Eleanor took a slow, triumphant sip of her champagne, leaning back against the leather cushions.

"Maya is a farm girl from upstate," Eleanor sneered, adjusting her diamond watch—a watch she had taken out of David’s master bedroom safe three days prior. "She thinks having a baby is a dramatic event. A little cold air builds character. Besides, David won't be back until January 5th. By the time he lands, we'll be back in Brooklyn, the apartment will be cleaned up, and David will write us a check for being such 'supportive family members'."

Mark laughed, tossing his cigar ash onto the hardwood deck. "To David’s deep pockets! The best brother-in-law a guy could ask for!"

They raised their glasses together, clinking the crystal loudly.

A few minutes later, a sharply dressed waiter in a white jacket approached the table carrying a silver tray. On it was a itemized receipt inside a leather folder, alongside a fresh bottle of $1,800 cognac Mark had ordered for the table.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," the waiter said politely. "Happy New Year. The manager asked me to settle the interim bar tab before serving the bottle. We currently have an outstanding total of $8,450 for the terrace service, in addition to the $5,200 incidentals authorization for the penthouse suite."

Mark waved his hand casually, pulling out a sleek matte-black corporate credit card—the authorized card linked directly to David’s primary business account.

"Put it all on this," Mark said with an arrogant grin. "And keep the cognac coming."

"Right away, sir."

The waiter swiped the card through the handheld wireless terminal. A quiet electronic beep echoed over the ambient music. The terminal screen flashed bright red.

TRANSACTION DECLINED - CODE 04: ACCOUNT FROZEN / REVOKED

The waiter frowned slightly, tried swiping it a second time, then inserted the chip.

TRANSACTION DECLINED - CONTACT ISSUING BANK

"I apologize, sir," the waiter said, his voice instantly losing its warm tone, turning crisp and formal. "This card has been declined by the issuing institution."

Mark’s smile faltered. "What? That's impossible. That's a high-limit corporate card. Swipe it again."

"I have processed it three times, sir. It is explicitly returning a revoked status."

Chloe scoffed loudly, rolling her eyes. "Oh, for heaven's sake, Mark, stop playing around. Use Mom's card."

Eleanor reached into her leather handbag—the one containing the remaining stack of David's stolen cash—and pulled out her personal platinum card, which was an authorized secondary line under David's personal wealth management account.

"Here," Eleanor said haughtily, handing it to the waiter. "Your machine probably has poor Wi-Fi. Use this one."

The waiter inserted Eleanor's card into the terminal.

TRANSACTION DECLINED - CODE 04: ACCOUNT FROZEN / REVOKED

Eleanor’s face turned bright red. "What is the meaning of this?! I have been a guest at this hotel chain for years! Call your manager immediately!"

Before the waiter could reply, Mark’s phone began buzzing frantically on the table. Then Chloe’s phone rang. Then Eleanor’s.

Notifications were flashing across all three of their screens simultaneously from their banking apps, corporate email accounts, and mortgage portals:

ALERT: Your authorized access to Collins Engineering LLC Accounts has been terminated by the Primary Account Holder.

ALERT: Credit Card Ending in #4092 Status Changed to: CANCELLED / FRAUD SUSPICION.

ALERT: Notice of Default - Mortgage Payment Authorization Revoked for 412 Elm Street, Unit 3B.

ALERT: Your employment credentials for Collins Engineering have been SUSPENDED pending internal audit.

A cold, suffocating silence fell over the VIP table. The ambient music of the resort suddenly sounded deafening, mocking them.

"Mark..." Chloe whispered, her voice trembling as she looked at her screen. "What does this mean? Why does it say my card is canceled?"

"My... my work email just logged me out," Mark stammered, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "It says my access has been revoked by the Chief Executive Officer."

Eleanor’s hands shook so violently she nearly dropped her champagne flute. "David... David did this. But... but he's in Germany! How could he know?!"

With trembling fingers, Eleanor dialed David’s private number. She put it on speakerphone, crowding around the table with Chloe, Mark, and Ethan.

The phone rang once. Twice.

David answered.

"David!" Eleanor shrieked into the phone, her voice cracking with a mixture of rage and rising panic. "David, what is going on with our cards?! We are sitting at a luxury resort in Miami on New Year's Eve, and every single card you gave us just declined! It is entirely humiliating! Fix this right now!"

There was a long silence on the other end of the line. The sound of a hospital heart monitor gently beeping in the background was faintly audible over the speaker.

When David spoke, his voice was not angry. It was flat, lifeless, and colder than the Arctic wind.

"Are you enjoying South Beach, Mother?" David asked quietly.

Eleanor blinked. "What... what are you talking about?"

"I asked if you're enjoying the ocean view," David continued softly. "Because I'm currently sitting in Room 404 of Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Maya is hooked up to an IV with a 103-degree fever and an infected surgical wound. Liam is lying in a bassinet next to her because he was shivering in a forty-degree apartment when I walked through the door three hours ago."

The air left Eleanor’s lungs in a violent gasp. Chloe gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. Mark went completely deathly pale.

"David..." Eleanor stuttered, her theatrical arrogance evaporating in an instant. "David, darling... listen to me... you don't understand—"

"I watched the camera footage, Eleanor," David interrupted, his tone chillingly precise. "I watched all eleven days of it. I saw you take the fourteen thousand dollars out of my safe. I saw Chloe steal Maya’s baby supplies. I saw Mark mock my wife while she was bleeding on the floor. And I heard what you said to her before you locked the door and left her to die."

"David, please!" Chloe sobbed into the phone, terror seizing her chest. "It wasn't like that! We were just stressed! We were going to come back in two days—"

"You have five minutes to pay your $13,600 hotel bill with your own money," David said, ignoring his sister entirely. "Because in six minutes, the hotel management is going to walk over to your table with resort security. I have already spoken directly to the General Manager of The Nautilus. I sent him the video files of you stealing funds from my home to pay for your trip. He has already flagged your reservation for grand larceny and credit fraud."

"David! You can't do this to your own family!" Eleanor screamed into the phone, tears of horror finally spilling over her mascara. "We're your blood! You can't leave us stranded in Miami!"

"I don't have a mother," David answered quietly. "And I don't have a sister. Do not ever call this number again."

The line went dead.

Eleanor stared at the glowing screen in utter shock.

"Sir?"

Eleanor looked up. Standing around their VIP table were three imposing resort security guards in dark suits, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the City of Miami Police Department. The hotel's General Manager stood right behind them, holding a clipboard with a stern, unyielding expression.

"Mrs. Eleanor Collins?" the General Manager asked coldly. "We have received a formal notice of fraud and unauthorized card usage from the primary account owner, Mr. David Collins, along with sworn video evidence. Furthermore, your room balance of $13,650 remains unpaid."

"We... we can pay!" Mark yelled nervously, pulling out his personal wallet. "I have a personal debit card!"

Mark handed his personal card to the manager. The manager swiped it.

INSUFFICIENT FUNDS

Mark had less than four hundred dollars in his personal savings account.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the lead police officer said, stepping forward, his hand resting casually on his belt holster. "You need to step away from the table. You are being detained for defrauding an innkeeper and suspected grand larceny pending formal extradition requests from New York."

As the glamorous patrons of South Beach watched and pulled out their phones to record, Eleanor, Chloe, Mark, and Ethan were escorted off the VIP deck in handcuffs, their evening gowns and designer suits dragging through the dirt, their frantic screams echoing uselessly into the warm ocean breeze.
