Chapter 6 - A New Beginning in the Light

Seven months later — December 31st.
The night air outside was cold and crisp, carrying the faint sound of holiday music and distant cheer across Park Slope. Snow was falling gently over Brooklyn, coating the brownstone steps and tree branches in a pristine, sparkling blanket of white.
Inside the Collins home, the atmosphere was filled with radiant warmth, soft golden light, and the delicious aroma of roasted chicken, garlic butter potatoes, and freshly baked apple pie.
A brilliant ten-foot Christmas tree stood in the corner of the living room, decorated with soft silver ornaments, warm yellow fairy lights, and personalized wooden stockings hanging from the mantelpiece—three of them, reading David, Maya, and Liam.
A roaring fire crackled merrily in the fireplace.
Maya stood in the kitchen, wearing a cozy burgundy sweater and jeans, putting the finishing touches on a festive dinner table set with fine china and fresh pine centerpieces. She looked vibrant, healthy, and deeply content.
A loud, joyful squeal echoed from the living room rug.
David was down on his hands and knees, wearing a matching sweater, playing peek-a-boo with one-year-old Liam.
Liam was now a energetic, curious toddler who was taking his very first independent steps. He wobbled on his chubby little legs, holding onto David’s thumbs, grinning widely with four tiny front teeth showing, before tumbling safely into his father's arms with a burst of laughter.
"Gotcha!" David laughed, picking Liam up and swinging him high into the air, making the boy shriek with delight before bringing him down for a big kiss on his soft cheek.
Maya walked out of the kitchen, wiping her hands on an apron, leaning against the archway with a warm, radiant smile watching her husband and son.
"Dinner is ready, boys," she announced softly.
David stood up, holding Liam securely against his hip, and walked over to Maya. He looked at her with an intensity of love that had only grown deeper with every passing month.
"Hard to believe it's been a whole year," David said softly, his eyes reflecting the warm glow of the fireplace.
Maya took a slow breath, looking around their warm, peaceful, beautiful home. There were no ghosts here anymore. No dark memories, no cruelty, no toxic shadows. Every inch of the apartment had been filled with love, laughter, respect, and safety.
"Last New Year's Eve was the worst night of my life," Maya admitted quietly, reaching up to touch David’s cheek. "But it was also the night I learned how fiercely you love us, David. You saved my life, and you gave Liam a real future."
"You both gave me a real purpose," David replied, laying his hand over hers. "I thought money and success were what made a man. But standing in this room tonight... knowing my family is safe, happy, and whole... this is the only thing that matters."
They sat down together at the dining table.
David poured two glasses of sparkling apple cider, handing one to Maya. He lifted his glass high.
"To new beginnings," David toasted softly.
"To our family," Maya added, clinking her glass against his. "And to unconditional love."

Outside the window, as the clock struck midnight, brilliant fireworks erupted over the New York City skyline, illuminating the dark winter sky in vibrant bursts of gold, crimson, and silver.
Inside, wrapped in the unbreakable warmth of true love, safety, and peace, David, Maya, and little Liam welcomed the New Year together—unbroken, triumphant, and forever whole.
