Chapter 4 - The Internal SiegeThe fallout from the dinner at Il Falcone was immediate and violent.

By sunrise, the Cassano empire was fractured. Dante Cassano had officially broken away from Roman’s inner circle, pulling two major districts and half the union docks into open rebellion. The old guard viewed Roman’s defense of Clare as a fatal weakness—a sign that a woman had blinded the head of the family to business realities.

Inside the Lake Forest estate, the guards were doubled. Armed men in black tactical gear patrolled the perimeter fences, and every vehicle entering the gates was subjected to bomb-sweeps.

Clare stood by the bedroom window, watching the snow begin to fall over the frozen gardens. She felt physically sick with guilt.

"It’s because of me," she whispered as Roman walked into the room, wrapping a fresh white bandage around his wounded right hand. "Your uncle... the docks... the unions. They’re turning against you because you drew a line in the sand for a wife who can't give you a child."

Roman finished securing the medical tape with his teeth, tossed the roll onto the dresser, and walked straight toward her. He caught her by the shoulders, turning her around to face him. His eyes were dark, steady, and blazing with absolute conviction.

"Look at me, Clare," he ordered.

She looked up.

"I didn't marry you for a baby. I married you," Roman said fiercely. "Dante has been looking for an excuse to challenge my authority for five years. If it wasn't this, it would have been something else. He wants power, and he thought he could use your medical privacy as a weapon. He miscalculated."

"Roman, they are going to try to destroy you," she pleaded, tears spilling over her lashes.

"Let them try," Roman replied, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "A war was coming anyway. Dante just accelerated the timetable. And this time, I won't leave survivors to question my throne."

Suddenly, the security intercom on the wall buzzed sharply.

Arthur’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight with urgency. "Boss. We’ve got an incoming vehicle at the outer gate. Unregistered. And... boss, it's not Dante’s men. It’s federal agents. A task force led by District Attorney Vance."

Roman’s expression hardened instantly. The realization hit them both with terrifying clarity.

Dante hadn't just rebelled against the family; he had sold them out to the feds. And the medical records clinic report was the exact piece of evidence the District Attorney needed to raid the estate on charges of corruption and financial sheltering.
