Chapter 6 - The True EmpireBy midnight, the federal agents were gone, the media was silenced by a swarm of high-priced Cassano lawyers, and the storm outside had cleared, leaving Chicago blanketed in pristine, untouched snow.

Inside the study, the fire crackled in the marble hearth, casting long, warm shadows across the room.

Roman sat at his desk, pouring a single glass of bourbon, his bandaged hand resting steadily on the wood. The front doors opened, and Arthur stepped in to report that Dante Cassano’s safehouse on the west side had just been abandoned, his capos scattering like rats in all directions.

The war was over. The throne was secure.

Clare walked quietly into the study, wearing a simple silk robe, her bare feet silent against the Persian rug. She stopped beside Roman’s chair, looking down at him with a mixture of awe and profound, unshakable love.

"They're gone," Clare whispered. "Dante... the feds... everyone."

Roman looked up, setting his glass down. He reached out, taking her hand and pulling her down onto his lap, wrapping his arms around her waist as if she were the only real thing in a world made of concrete and blood.

"I told you, Clare," Roman murmured against her neck, his breath warm and steady. "No one touches what belongs to me."

"Even when I couldn't give you what they wanted?" she asked, her voice cracking slightly with old insecurities. "Even when my body failed the contract?"

Roman pulled back, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, fierce devotion.

"A child would have been an heir to an empire of stone, Clare," Roman said softly, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. "But you... you are the peace at the end of the war. You are my home. And I didn't marry you for a bloodline. I married you because you were the only light I ever found in the dark."

Clare buried her face in his shoulder, letting the last of her fears melt away into the quiet warmth of the room. She couldn't give him a biological heir, but as she listened to the steady, powerful beat of his heart beneath her cheek, she knew the truth:

They had built an empire together, and nothing in this world could ever tear it down.
