Chapter 3 - THE BATTLE LINE IS DRAWNThe emergency shelter hummed with the restless energy of displaced residents, crying children, and exhausted rescue workers. But for Álvaro, Daniel, and Pilar, the corner they occupied felt isolated in a bubble of cold reality.

Álvaro stood up, pacing the length of the metal cot. His executive mind, usually calm and methodical, was racing through the legal and operational implications.

"If this syndicate is operating out of the Paterna industrial park using our security loopholes," Álvaro said, speaking half to himself, "they aren't just targeting you, Daniel. They are positioning themselves to hijack our upcoming municipal logistics contract with the Valencia Port Authority next month. That contract is worth twelve million euros. If customs finds a single contraband item originating from our loading dock, our company will be permanently blacklisted, and I will personally face federal conspiracy charges."

Daniel looked up, wiping his face with his sleeve. "What are we going to do? If we go to the police right now, Ignacio’s people have corrupt contacts inside the local precinct. We tried filing a report three weeks ago; the desk sergeant conveniently lost the paperwork before the end of the shift."

"We don't go to the local precinct," Álvaro said coldly, stopping his pacing and looking down at Daniel with a look of absolute determination. "We bypass them entirely. We take this straight to the National Police’s Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Unit in Madrid. I have direct connections there through our corporate legal retainer."

Pilar shook her head slowly, clutching her blanket tighter around her shoulders. "It’s too late for secret legal channels, Mr. Vidal. Ignacio knows you brought us into your car tonight. His spotters watch our building around the clock. By tomorrow morning, when the floodwaters recede, they will know you spent hours with us. You are a target now, too."

As if on cue, the shelter's heavy double doors swung open, and a blast of cold, damp wind swept through the room. Several police officers rushed in, shouting instructions to shelter coordinators. But among the rescue workers, Álvaro’s sharp eyes caught a glimpse of movement near the entrance that sent a spike of adrenaline through his system.

A man in a dark waterproof jacket was standing just inside the doorway, scanning the rows of cots. He wasn't wearing a rescue vest. He had a scar running down the left side of his jaw, and his eyes locked directly onto Álvaro with a predatory, chilling stare.

Ignacio’s enforcer.

"Get down," Álvaro hissed, grabbing Daniel by the shoulder and pulling him behind a high partition.

"What is it?" Daniel whispered.

"They're already here," Álvaro muttered, his heart pounding. "They tracked us."

The man in the waterproof jacket began walking slowly down the aisle between the cots, his right hand jammed deep inside his jacket pocket, clearly gripping something heavy and metallic.

Álvaro realized they were trapped. The shelter had only one main exit, and the back emergency doors were bolted shut from the outside due to the flood risk. They had less than sixty seconds before the enforcer reached their row.
