Chapter 4 - THE ESCAPE FROM THE SHELTERThe fluorescent lights overhead flickered as a backup generator groaned under the strain of the facility's power load. The man with the scarred jaw kept walking down the aisle, his heavy boots crunching softly against the linoleum floor, parting the displaced residents like a shark moving through a school of fish.

"Listen to me carefully," Álvaro whispered, leaning close to Daniel and Pilar behind the flimsy plastic partition. "We need to move now. When I give the signal, we head toward the supply storage room in the back corner. There’s a service hatch that leads out into the alley."
"I can't walk fast, Mr. Vidal," Pilar said, her face pale, her left leg dragging slightly as she tried to stand. "Leave me. Save yourselves. If Ignacio catches us all—"
"Nobody is leaving anyone behind," Daniel interrupted fiercely, his voice filled with a sudden, unyielding strength. He scooped his mother up into his arms, ignoring his own exhaustion and bruises. "I carried her through a river tonight, and I can carry her out of here."
"Go!" Álvaro muttered.
He stood up suddenly, stepping directly into the aisle right in front of the approaching enforcer.
The scarred man stopped dead in his tracks, blinking in surprise as Álvaro blocked his path. For a second, the enforcer’s hand shifted deeper into his jacket pocket.
"Can I help you, friend?" Álvaro asked, projecting a chilling, corporate authority that completely masked his internal terror. "This is a restricted emergency zone. Are you looking for someone?"
The enforcer sneered, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Move aside, corporate. You're in the wrong neighborhood."
"I think you're the one who is lost," Álvaro replied smoothly, taking a deliberate step forward to block the man's line of sight toward the storage room where Daniel and Pilar were slipping through the door. "If you're looking for the Paterna warehouse management, you can talk directly to me. I'm Álvaro Vidal, operations manager. And I have a lot of questions about your illegal freight operations."
The enforcer’s face darkened with sudden, violent rage. He pulled his hand out of his pocket—clutching a heavy, snub-nosed iron pipe. "You're digging your own grave, Vidal."
Before the man could swing, Álvaro lunged forward, using every ounce of his weight to slam into the enforcer’s chest, driving him backward against a stack of emergency supply crates. Plastic water bottles and boxes of blankets cascaded down around them in a chaotic avalanche.
"Security! Police!" Álvaro shouted at the top of his lungs, wrestling for control of the iron pipe.
Whistles blew across the shelter. Flashlights blinded the aisle as two national guard officers rushed toward the commotion, weapons drawn.
"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!" an officer roared, leveling his rifle at the enforcer.

The scarred man froze, glared venomously at Álvaro one last time, and slowly let the iron pipe drop to the floor. As the officers forced him to his knees and slapped cuffs onto his wrists, Álvaro backed away slowly, wiping blood from a scrape on his forearm.
He turned and bolted toward the back storage room.
