Chapter 3 - THE BREACH AT THE GATESRocco’s demeanor shifted in a fraction of a millisecond. The introspective, grieving brother vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless syndicate boss who commanded an empire of blood and steel.

"Julian!" Rocco roared, his voice cracking like a whip through the quiet hallway.
Julian came sprinting around the corner, his face whiter than paper. "Boss! Sector Four perimeter sensors just tripped! A black SUV just breached the outer security gate on River Road. They bypassed the biometric scanners using a military-grade EMP relay!"
"How many?" Rocco demanded, striding toward the grand mahogany desk in the corner of the foyer where a concealed wall-panel clicked open, revealing an array of monitors displaying live thermal feeds of the estate.
"At least six operatives," Julian reported, his fingers flying across a digital keypad. "Tactical gear, heavy suppression rifles. They aren't local enforcers, Boss. They're professionals. Syndicate hit squads."
I stood frozen near the center of the marble floor, my backpack slipping from my shoulder and hitting the ground with a dull thud. Hit squads? This wasn't a corporate dispute or a mafia turf war out of a movie; this was real, and they were here. Because of me? Because I had accidentally gotten into Rocco Marchetti’s car? Or because my mother’s past had finally caught up with us?
"Rocco—" I started, my voice catching.
"Shut up and stay behind me," Rocco ordered, not unkindly, though his tone admitted zero argument. He reached into the hidden wall-panel and pulled out a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer pistol, checking the magazine with practiced, lethal efficiency before tucking it into the holster beneath his suit jacket.
He turned to Julian. "Initiate lockdown protocol Delta. Seal the panic room, route all communication feeds to the subterranean bunker, and activate the perimeter jammer. If anyone crosses the north rose garden, give the order to fire."
"Yes, Boss!" Julian scrambled toward a secure terminal behind the staircase.
Rocco turned his dark, intense gaze back to me. He grabbed my upper arm, his grip firm but careful, and pulled me toward a concealed doorway disguised as a wooden bookshelf near the study entrance.
"Where are we going?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
"To the safe room," Rocco said tersely as he punched a six-digit code into a keypad hidden behind a row of leather-bound encyclopedias. The heavy oak bookcase hissed and swung inward, revealing a dimly lit, reinforced concrete corridor lined with electrical cables and emergency backup batteries. "My estate is designed to withstand a mortar attack, but I am not taking any chances with you."
"With me? This is your war, Mr. Marchetti! I was just trying to get home to my neuropsychology textbook!" I protested, stumbling as he pulled me into the narrow corridor.
May you like
"Your mother was an Elena Marchetti by birth, which means their crosshairs were painted on your back the day you were born," Rocco snapped, his voice hard as iron. "You are my blood. In my world, that makes you my responsibility—whether you like it or not."
The heavy bookcase clicked shut behind us, plunging the corridor into a secure, insulated silence that muffled the distant, ominous pop of automatic gunfire echoing from the front lawns. Rocco drew his pistol, leading me down the concrete steps into the damp, subterranean core of the estate, where the true, dark heart of the Marchetti empire operated away from the glittering lights of New York society.
