Chapter 4 - THE INTERROGATION IN THE DARKThe subterranean bunker beneath the Hudson Valley estate smelled of ozone, gun oil, and cold concrete. Unlike the opulent, marble-pillared luxury of the main foyer above, this room was purely utilitarian: reinforced steel walls, glowing server racks humming with encrypted data streams, and a single metal table illuminated by an overhead goose-neck lamp.

Rocco pushed me gently toward a metal chair by the table, then paced the perimeter of the room, his dark eyes constantly darting toward the security monitors mounted on the far wall. On the screens, thermal imaging showed at least half a dozen masked figures moving methodically across the front terrace, their automatic weapons raised as they systematically cleared the glass-paned sunrooms.

"They aren't here to rob the house," Rocco murmured, half to himself. "They’re searching for something specific. Or someone."

"You think they followed me?" I asked, sitting rigidly on the edge of the metal chair, my hands clutched tightly in my lap. The adrenaline rush was beginning to fade, leaving behind a hollow, shivering exhaustion that made my bones ache. "When I left the café... did someone see me get into your car?"

"Nobody tracks my vehicles by accident, Maya," Rocco stopped pacing and looked down at me, his expression unreadable. "My transport cars are shielded against electronic surveillance. For someone to intercept us—or track you to that specific street corner—they either had eyes on you for days, or your phone’s internal GPS beacon was compromised."

My hand flew to my jacket pocket. I pulled out my phone. The screen flickered weakly before displaying a dying battery warning: 2% remaining.

"My phone..." I whispered. "I dropped it in the café breakroom two days ago for twenty minutes while I was helping inventory the stockroom. One of the new prep cooks—a guy named Leo—said he found it behind the espresso machine."

Rocco’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Describe him."

"Tall, quiet, always wore a black baseball cap pulled low over his forehead. He said he used to work private security before the hospitality industry." I swallowed hard. "Rocco... do you think he was working for them?"

Before Rocco could answer, the primary security monitor above the desk flared red. A sharp, piercing alarm shrieked through the bunker’s intercom system.

"Boss!" Julian’s voice crackled over the emergency comms channel, sounding frantic and breathless. "They’ve breached the main foyer! They’re using thermite charges on the vault door! I’m rerouting the power grid, but—"

The comms feed cut out with a violent burst of static.

On the central monitor, the camera feed from the grand foyer showed a blinding flash of white-hot light as a thermal charge melted through the reinforced steel doors of the ground-floor trophy room. Three masked operatives in tactical black gear poured through the smoking opening, rifles raised, methodically sweeping the room.

"They're coming down the service stairwell," Rocco said coldly, his voice devoid of fear, filled only with a lethal, terrifying calm. He reached into his jacket, pulled out an extra magazine of ammunition, and slammed it into the grip of his pistol.

He looked at me, his dark gaze softening for just a fraction of a second.

"Stay under this desk, Maya," he ordered, his tone absolute. "Do not make a sound. Do not move. If I don't come back through that door in twenty minutes, press the red panic button on the wall panel. It will flood this bunker with inert gas and lock the exterior bulkheads permanently. You'll be safe here until federal extraction arrives."

"Wait—what?" I stood up from the chair, panic surging through my veins. "You're going out there to fight six professional hitmen by yourself?!"

May you like

"I am a Marchetti," Rocco said simply, sliding the safety switch of his pistol off with a sharp click. "We don't hide in bunkers. We clean our own house."

Before I could grab his sleeve or argue further, Rocco turned, pushed open the heavy steel door of the bunker, and stepped out into the dark, smoke-filled corridors of his besieged home, leaving me alone with the hum of the servers and the distant echoes of war.
