Chapter 5 - The Trap at the DocksThe fragile peace we had established over the following weeks shattered on a crisp Tuesday morning in early November.

Vincent had left for an emergency meeting at the Moretti shipping terminals down by the commercial harbor—a rare daytime visit to the docks that usually signaled a major dispute with rival syndicates. By mid-morning, my phone buzzed incessantly on the kitchen counter. It was an unknown number, followed by a text message containing a single, chilling photo:
A grainy, hidden-camera image of Maisie and Rosie playing in the estate's rear garden, accompanied by a text: Tell Vincent the Providence deal goes through today, or the girls find a new nanny permanently.
My blood turned to ice water.
Security at the Moretti estate was supposed to be impenetrable. How had someone managed to snap a clear photo of the girls inside the private perimeter?
Panic threatened to paralyze me, but years of surviving on my own instincts kicked in. I immediately rounded up the girls, brought them inside the main secure panic room located behind the library’s false wall—a feature Vincent had shown me during my first week just in case of an emergency—and locked the heavy steel door.
I grabbed the dedicated encrypted satellite phone Vincent had given me for emergencies, dialing his private direct line with trembling fingers.
It rang twice before a harsh, breathless voice answered. “Elise? What is it? The girls—”
“They’re safe, they’re in the panic room,” I rushed out, my voice tight with adrenaline. “Someone got inside the perimeter, Vincent. They sent a photo of the girls playing in the garden ten minutes ago. They said the Providence deal has to go through today or else.”
A terrifying, dead silence hung over the line for three agonizing seconds. When Vincent spoke, his voice didn't sound like a grieving father anymore. It sounded like an executioner.
“Marcus Vance,” Vincent whispered, the name dripping with absolute, lethal venom. “He thinks he can use my daughters to force my hand while I’m away from the estate.”
“Where are you?” I demanded.
“Warehouse 4 at the south pier,” Vincent said grimly. “Listen to me, Elise. Do not open that door for anyone except me or my head of security, Mateo. I am heading back right now.”
“No,” I said firmly, shocking even myself. “Don’t come back yet, Vincent. If Marcus Vance is watching the estate, he’s expecting you to panic and run straight home into an ambush on the highway. You need to finish whatever business you have at the docks and trap him where he feels strongest.”
“Elise, I am not risking my daughters’ lives—!”
“Neither am I,” I interrupted, my voice ringing with absolute conviction. “I have them safe. I have the security override codes. You go down to Warehouse 4, settle this once and for all, and end this war. Because until you cut the head off this snake, your girls will never be safe.”
A heavy, ragged breath escaped Vincent’s lips on the other end of the line.

“Be careful, Elise,” he growled, the raw emotion in his voice breaking through his mafia boss armor. “If anything happens to you or my girls... I will burn every port from here to Boston to the ground.”
The line went dead.
