Chapter 6 - A New DawnThe hours that followed were the longest of my life. Inside the reinforced steel panic room, I kept Maisie and Rosie entertained with whispered stories and shadow puppets against the soft emergency light, hiding my own trembling terror behind a bright, comforting smile.

It wasn't until late afternoon that the heavy steel door finally unlocked with a pneumatic hiss.
Mateo, the head of security, stood in the doorway with a relieved expression. “Miss Navarro. The perimeter is secure. Mr. Moretti is waiting for you in the study.”
I escorted the girls up to their nursery, handing them over to the trusted nursing staff with strict instructions, before hurrying down the wide corridors toward Vincent’s private study. The heavy oak door stood slightly ajar.
I pushed it open and stepped inside.
Vincent stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the evening dusk. He had a white bandage wrapped tightly around his left forearm, and his knuckles were bruised and bloodied. He turned slowly as I entered, his dark eyes sweeping over me to ensure I was unharmed.
“Is it over?” I asked softly, stopping a few feet away.
“It’s over,” Vincent said, his voice quiet, devoid of the manic adrenaline from earlier. “Marcus Vance tried to pull a coup at Warehouse 4 while his men leaked into the estate perimeter. My team intercepted both. Marcus is currently answering federal and private inquiries from a very uncomfortable location, and the Providence shipping routes belong exclusively to us.”
He let out a long, shuddering breath, walking toward me across the Persian rug until he stood close enough that I could feel the heat radiating from him.
“You told me not to panic,” Vincent said, a faint, genuine smile finally touching the corners of his mouth. “You stayed calm. You protected my daughters when every instinct told you to run.”
“I told you, Mr. Moretti,” I whispered, looking up into his dark, striking eyes. “I’m not easily scared.”
Vincent reached out slowly, his large, warm hand gently cupping my cheek. The contrast between his bruised knuckles and the tender, reverent touch sent a shiver straight down my spine.
“My name is Vincent,” he murmured, his gaze dropping briefly to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes. “Stop calling me Mr. Moretti.”
“Vincent,” I tested the name on my tongue, finding that it felt entirely right.
He leaned down slowly, closing the remaining distance between us. When his lips met mine, the kiss wasn't born of rush or desperation; it was the quiet, profound collision of two broken worlds finally finding their footing in the dark. It was the absolute dismantling of the feared mafia boss, replaced entirely by a man who had finally allowed himself to hope again.

When we finally pulled apart, resting our foreheads together in the quiet sanctuary of the study, the evening shadows lengthened across the floorboards. Outside, across the sprawling lawns of the Moretti estate, the lights of the secure gates shone bright and steady against the night.
The grief that had haunted these halls for three long years hadn't magically vanished, but the darkness had finally broken. And standing beside Vincent, holding his hand as distant laughter drifted down from the nursery upstairs, I knew I had finally found my home.
