Chapter 4 - The Web of Deceit and DangerThree days later, rain was once again falling over Lake Michigan, but inside Dante’s multi-floor penthouse penthouse in the Gold Coast, the atmosphere was filled with warmth, firelight, and the soft, sweet sound of a baby’s laughter.

Noah was sitting on a plush wool rug in front of the crackling fireplace, happily banging a wooden block against a soft toy truck.

Dante sat on the floor beside him, his jacket off, his tie loosened, down on his hands and knees completely unbothered by the fact that his ten-thousand-dollar custom trousers were collecting baby drool. He held out a small red ball, rolling it gently across the rug.

“Come on, Noah,” Dante coaxed softly, a wide, genuine smile illuminating his rugged face—a smile Claire had not seen in over two years. “Roll it back to Dad. Come on, big guy.”

Noah let out a loud, triumphant babble, slamming his hands on the rug before picking up the red ball and throwing it straight at Dante’s face.

Dante caught it with lightning-fast reflexes, bursting into a deep, rich laugh that filled the high-ceilinged room. He leaned over, scooping Noah up into his arms and blowing a raspberries on the baby’s belly, making Noah squeal with delight.

Claire stood near the kitchen island, holding two mugs of hot cocoa, watching them with a quiet, overwhelming sense of peace.

Marcus stepped into the room through the private elevator foyer, carrying a thick black leather binder. He looked exhausted, but his eyes were sharp.

“Boss,” Marcus said quietly, acknowledging Claire with a respectful nod. “We finished the deep forensic audit on Victoria’s private accounts and her offshore shell companies in the Caymans.”

Dante’s smile faded slightly, though he kept Noah held safely against his chest, gently rubbing the baby’s back. “What did you find?”

Marcus opened the binder. “It’s worse than we thought. Victoria wasn't just trying to protect her stipend. She’s broke.”

Claire walked over, setting the mugs down, her brow furrowing. “Broke? How could she be broke? She lived like royalty.”

“Gambling debts in Macau and terrible investments in fake European real estate funds,” Marcus explained. “Over the last five years, she siphoned nearly fourteen million dollars out of the Bellamy Charitable Foundation to cover her debts. She knew that if Dante married Claire and had a legitimate blood heir, the family trust terms would automatically trigger a full independent audit by an outside trustee.”

Claire gasped. “So if I had stayed... if Dante and I had married fifteen months ago...”

“The audit would have happened then,” Dante realized, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “She would have been exposed for grand embezzlement and sent to federal prison five years ago. She didn't just want to eliminate my heir—she was buying time to cover her financial crimes.”

“There’s more,” Marcus added gravely. “When you stripped her of her foundation access three days ago, she panicked. She reached out to illegal lenders in Chicago—specifically the Moretti syndicate.”

Dante froze. The air in the room instantly turned lethal. “The Morettis?”

“She offered them the security codes to the Gold Coast estate and the private vault keys in exchange for six million dollars in cash to flee the country,” Marcus said. “The Morettis accepted the offer. They plan to hit the estate tonight, thinking you and Claire are staying there.”

Claire felt a cold shiver run down her spine. She reached out, instinctively touching Noah’s small back. “Dante...”

Dante stood up slowly, handing Noah gently into Claire’s arms. He looked at Marcus, his face devoid of fear—only a terrifying, calculated coldness remained.

“They think we are at the estate?” Dante asked softly.

“Yes, Boss. Victoria told them you moved back in yesterday.”

Dante walked over to the desk, pulled out a sleek silver fountain pen, and signed a document lying on the blotter.

“Marcus,” Dante said. “Call the Special Operations Division of the Chicago Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Give them the exact time and location of the Moretti hand-off at the estate tonight. Ensure Victoria is in the room when the money changes hands.”

Marcus grinned—a cold, ruthless expression. “Understood, Boss. It’s a clean sweep.”

“And Marcus?” Dante added, leaning against the mahogany desk. “Make sure the press is waiting outside the gate when they lead her out in handcuffs.”

“Consider it done.” Marcus bowed his head and exited down the elevator.

Dante turned back to Claire. He walked over to her, wrapping his long arms around both her and Noah, pulling them tight against his warm chest.

“It’s almost over, my love,” Dante whispered into her hair, kissing her temple with tender devotion. “The lies, the fear, the running. Tonight, the shadows are washed away forever.”

Claire closed her eyes, resting her forehead against his neck, breathing in his scent. “I’m not afraid anymore, Dante. Not as long as we’re together.”
