Chapter 2 - The Erection of the Trap

While I was dismantling his life from a quiet room in Pasadena, Ryan Mercer was waking up in the sprawling master suite of the Elmwood Drive estate, completely unaware that the ground beneath his feet had already turned to dust.
To Ryan, life was a continuous reel of luxury commercials. He was a senior acquisitions VP at Apex Capital, a mid-tier real estate investment firm that had enjoyed a suspiciously smooth run of high-yield commercial contracts over the last four years. Of course, Ryan believed his success was entirely self-made. Whenever he sat at elite country club bars across Century City, sipping twenty-year single-malt scotch, he loved to regale his colleagues with stories of his "financial wizardry" and how he had outmaneuvered older, more established developers.
He conveniently forgot that every single one of those "brilliant acquisitions" had been quietly vetted, underwritten, and financially backed by shell companies controlled by Mercer Holdings. When Apex Capital needed an emergency injection of twenty million dollars to save a collapsing downtown retail plaza two years ago, it was my signature on a wire transfer that rescued them. Ryan had taken the bonus, bought a new matte-black Porsche 911 Turbo, and toasted to his own genius.
At 9:00 a.m., Ryan stepped into his sleek corporate office on the thirty-second floor of a Century City high-rise. He wore a custom-tailored charcoal Brioni suit, his hair slicked back with expensive pomade, smelling faintly of sandalwood and arrogance.
His assistant, a sharp young woman named Chloe, hurried over with a tablet and a steaming cup of artisan espresso.
"Good morning, Mr. Mercer. You have the quarterly board review at ten, followed by a lunch meeting with the developers from the Marina Del Rey project," Chloe reported efficiently.
"Good, good," Ryan murmured, tossing his designer leather briefcase onto his glass desk without looking at her. "Did the wire from the San Diego land sale clear yet? I need those liquidity figures for the board presentation so I can rub old man Henderson's nose in our ROI."
Chloe hesitated, tapping rapidly on her tablet. "Actually, Mr. Mercer... that’s part of what I needed to tell you. There seems to be an issue with our primary operating accounts this morning."
Ryan frowned, pausing as he unbuttoned his suit jacket. "An issue? What kind of issue? The funds were guaranteed by our primary guarantor trust."
"Well, that’s just it," Chloe said, looking genuinely unnerved. "At 8:30 a.m., Apex Capital’s corporate comptroller received an automated freeze notice from Apex Horizon LLC and Mercer Trust. All secondary credit lines have been suspended, and our primary holding accounts have been locked pending an immediate financial audit."
Ryan froze, a sudden flicker of irritation crossing his handsome face. "Mercer Trust? That’s impossible. That’s just a legacy entity my father’s old accounting firm uses for tax structuring. Why would they freeze our operational liquidity? Did someone miss a filing?"
"Mr. Mercer, it wasn't a clerical error," Chloe swallowed hard. "The legal notice was signed by Arthur Sterling himself. He’s your father’s general counsel."
Ryan scoffed, waving a dismissive hand as he walked around his desk and sat down in his ergonomic leather chair. "Old Leon doesn't even know what a ledger looks like anymore. He’s living in the past, pottering around in his dusty old Pasadena garage with his antique tools. Call Sterling’s office. Tell them Ryan Mercer demands an immediate override. This is an administrative glitch, nothing more."
Chloe didn't move. She stood nervously by the desk, clutching her tablet. "Mr. Mercer... I tried calling Sterling’s direct line. His secretary informed me that the freeze is absolute, authorized at the highest executive level, and that all inquiries must be directed to their litigation department."
For the first time that morning, a cold drop of unease settled in the pit of Ryan’s stomach. He stared at his assistant, his mind refusing to connect the dots. "Litigation? What litigation? We’re partners! My family is the backing!"
Before Chloe could answer, the office door swung open without a knock.
Standing in the doorway was Marcus Vance, Apex Capital’s managing director and Ryan’s direct superior. Marcus’s face was as pale as chalk, his eyes wide with panic as he clutched a sheaf of freshly printed legal documents.
"Ryan," Marcus said, his voice shaking with suppressed fury. "What the hell have you done?"
Ryan stood up, smoothing his tie, trying to project absolute corporate confidence. "Marcus, calm down. There’s a minor paperwork hiccup with my father’s Pasadena trust, but my assistant is—"
"Shut up!" Marcus roared, slamming the documents onto the glass desk. "Paperwork hiccup? Do you have any idea what just hit our firm? Apex Horizon LLC just issued an immediate notice of loan recall on our entire downtown commercial portfolio! They are demanding fifty million dollars in cash settlement within forty-eight hours, or they are foreclosing on every single asset we own!"
Ryan stared at the papers, the bold header of Mercer Holdings Trust glaring up at him in crisp, black typeface.
"Fifty million?" Ryan whispered, the color draining from his face. "That... that’s impossible. That’s our entire operating capital! If they foreclose, Apex Capital goes belly up by close of business today."
"Belly up?" Marcus laughed hysterically, leaning over the desk until his face was inches from Ryan’s. "Ryan, you arrogant little fool. Who is Apex Horizon LLC? Who is the ultimate beneficiary of Mercer Trust?"
May you like
Ryan’s lips parted, but no sound came out. The name echoed in his ears like a death knell.
My father.
