Chapter 3 - The Summons at the Boardroom Door

The executive offices of Cambridge Pharma were a masterclass in modern corporate elegance. Vaulted glass walls, polished concrete floors, and panoramic views of the city skyline created an environment where multi-million-dollar decisions were made with the quiet stroke of a pen.

Maya sat at the head of the long oak conference table, reviewing the third-quarter fiscal projections, her mind sharp, focused, and entirely untethered from the emotional wreckage of her personal life. Beside her sat David Vance, the senior corporate counsel—no relation to Ethan, despite the unfortunate coincidence of names—who had handled her estate planning for years.

"The preliminary injunction has been officially served to Mr. Vance at the penthouse," David reported quietly, sliding a legal docket across the table. "He’s legally barred from touching any joint liquidity, and the freeze on his secondary credit lines has been upheld by the circuit court due to documented financial misuse and your status as primary asset holder."

"And his parents?" Maya asked, not looking up from her tablet.

"Completely cut off," David replied with a faint, approving smile. "Your father-in-law's medical bills are still covered directly by your separate personal trust, but we've rerouted the payments so they go straight to the hospital rather than passing through family accounts. Evelyn and Liam’s allowances have evaporated. Word is, Liam’s luxury SUV was repossessed from the country club parking lot this morning."

A soft knock interrupted their conversation. Maya’s executive assistant, Sarah, poked her head through the glass door, looking slightly flustered.

"Dr. Sterling? You have a visitor in the lobby. He... well, he claims to be your husband, and security is having a bit of a hard time keeping him calm."

Maya sighed softly, closing her tablet. "Send him in, Sarah."

A minute later, the glass door swung open, and Ethan stormed into the boardroom. He looked disheveled—his hair uncombed, his designer suit wrinkled as if he had slept in it, and his face twisted in an ugly mask of desperation and rage.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Maya?!" Ethan shouted, slamming both palms down onto the edge of the conference table.

David immediately stood up, stepping between Ethan and Maya, his expression cold and professional. "Mr. Vance, I must ask you to lower your voice and maintain appropriate decorum. This is a private corporate boardroom."

Ethan glared past the lawyer at Maya, his chest heaving. "Stay out of this, David. This is between me and my wife. Maya, are you insane? Do you have any idea what you've done? My credit cards are declined, my car was towed from the club, and my mother is having a complete nervous breakdown because she can't pay her hairdresser!"

Maya remained seated, her posture impeccably straight, her hands folded calmly in her lap. She looked at Ethan not with anger, but with the clinical detachment of a scientist examining a specimen under a microscope.

"Your mother will just have to learn to live within her means, Ethan," Maya said evenly. "Just like you are going to have to learn."

"This is madness!" Ethan yelled, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "We’re married! Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine! You can't just cut me off like a stranger!"

"Everything you have is mine, Ethan. That is correct," Maya corrected smoothly. "You haven't earned a single cent of the lifestyle you've enjoyed for the past five years. You’ve been living off my dividends while pretending to be a captain of industry at a consultancy that pays you fifty grand a year."

Ethan’s face flushed a deep, mottled red. "You humiliated me! You had security block my keycard at the building! My colleagues are staring at me!"

"Your colleagues will soon be staring at something much worse," Maya said, her voice dropping to a chilling whisper. "When my divorce attorney finishes presenting the forensic accounting report to the court—detailing how you funneled nearly two hundred thousand dollars of marital assets into secret accounts for your brother's failed business ventures without my consent—you won't just be embarrassed. You'll be facing criminal embezzlement charges."

Ethan froze. The rage drained from his face in an instant, replaced by a sickly, ash-gray pallor. "You... you audited me?"

"I'm a Chief Financial Officer, Ethan," Maya said, standing up slowly from her chair and buttoning her blazer. "Did you really think I wouldn't notice half a million dollars walking out the back door of our estate?"

May you like

She walked past him toward the door, stopping just inches from his shoulder.

"Sign the divorce papers, Ethan," she whispered softly into his ear. "It’s the only way you avoid prison."
