Chapter 4 - The Vultures Circle

The social hierarchy of Cambridge’s elite was built on two things: old money and ruthless discretion. Within forty-eight hours of Maya’s asset freeze, the fragile, gossip-hungry ecosystem of Evelyn Vance’s social circle had picked the family bones clean.

Evelyn sat in the leather-and-chrome living room of her suburban colonial home—a house that Maya’s corporate bonuses had paid off three years prior—staring blankly at her silent smartphone. The screen hadn’t lit up with a single notification from a country club friend or boutique manager all morning.

The front door swung open, and Liam walked in, looking like a thundercloud. He tossed his keys onto the entryway table with a loud clatter.

"They canceled my membership at the golf club, Mom," Liam growled, pacing across the room. "The manager practically threw me out in front of everyone. Said my corporate dues bounced. Where is Ethan? Why hasn't he fixed this yet?"

"Ethan is a fool," Evelyn snapped, her voice shaking with bitter fury as she stood up from her chair. "He let that ungrateful, cold-hearted woman walk all over him from day one! I told him he should have married someone from our own background—someone who understood proper wifely submission instead of a career-obsessed robot!"

"Well, complaining about it isn't going to pay my lease," Liam muttered, sinking onto the sofa and burying his face in his hands. "My creditors are calling every twenty minutes. If I don't come up with twenty grand by Monday, the Mercedes gets repossessed permanently."

Just then, the doorbell rang.

Evelyn straightened her silk blouse, her expression hardening into one of haughty entitlement. "That must be the delivery from the caterer. At least we still have some food in the house."

She marched to the front door and threw it open, expecting a delivery driver or perhaps a neighbor coming to offer sympathy. Instead, standing on the porch were two men in dark charcoal suits holding heavy leather briefcases.

"Mrs. Evelyn Vance?" the older man asked briskly, flashing a metallic badge.

Evelyn stepped back, her eyes narrowing. "Yes? Who are you?"

"I’m Officer Miller with the Cambridge Police Department financial crimes division, and this is Mr. Sterling’s senior legal counsel," the man announced, stepping across the threshold uninvited. "We are serving you with an official notice of asset recovery and subpoena for questioning regarding fraudulent property transfers."

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. "Property transfers? What are you talking about? This house belongs to my husband and me!"

The lawyer stepped forward, handing her a thick manila folder. "Actually, Mrs. Vance, according to the deed registered with the county clerk, this entire property—along with your primary vehicle and your vacation home in Naples—was purchased entirely with funds from Dr. Maya Sterling's personal equity trust. Furthermore, financial audits reveal that over the past three years, you and your husband fraudulently solicited over three hundred thousand dollars under false pretenses of medical emergencies that never actually existed."

Liam bolted up from the couch, rushing toward the door. "That’s ridiculous! That was family support!"

"That was systemic wire fraud," the lawyer corrected coldly. "And unless you can produce verifiable medical receipts for every single dollar transferred out of Dr. Sterling’s trust, the state will be seizing these assets under civil forfeiture laws by Monday morning."

Evelyn grabbed the doorframe to steady herself, her vision swimming as the reality of their destruction finally crashed down around her. The comfortable, parasitic world they had built on Maya’s hard work wasn't just collapsing—it was being surgically dismantled, piece by piece, leaving them completely naked in the cold.
