Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

Two days later, the grand ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in Mexico City was packed with the elite of Mexican high society, fashion influencers, and journalists. Valeria was hosting her annual "Mothers for Mexico" charity auction—a highly publicized event that she used to cement her status as the country’s leading philanthropic mother.
She stood near the stage, wearing a stunning emerald gown, laughing as photographers snapped her picture. She looked radiant, completely unbothered by the fact that her son was hooked to an IV line across town.
Suddenly, the massive projection screens behind the stage, which were supposed to display slides of the charity’s accomplishments, went black.
The chatter in the ballroom died down.
A low, deep hum vibrated through the sound system. Then, a voice began to play.
It was a child’s voice. Quiet, terrified, and sobbing.
“Please, Mommy, stop... It burns... The suit burns...”
Valeria’s glass of champagne slipped from her hand, shattering on the marble floor. Her face turned a horrific shade of grey as her own voice boomed through the speakers.
“Shut up, Diego! You are ruining everything! Do you want us to be poor? Do you want your father to see you looking like a peasant? Put the suit on and take the medicine.”
The Public RuinThe ballroom erupted into shocked whispers. Guests stared at each other, their eyes wide with horror.
Before Valeria’s team could shut down the system, the screens flickered to life. Instead of charity photos, they displayed the official medical reports from ABC Santa Fe Hospital. High-definition images of the chemical burns, the deep, necrotic bruising from the compression garments, and the toxicological reports detailing the chemical sedation were splashed across the giant screens.
The doors of the ballroom slammed open.
Ricardo Galván walked in, flanked by four federal police officers and representatives from the Federal Child Protective Services (DIF). He did not wear his usual business suit; he wore simple, dark clothes, his expression cold and unyielding as a marble statue.

Valeria backed away toward the stage, her hands shaking. “This is a lie! This is a deepfake! Ricardo is using his AI company to ruin me! Security, throw him out!”
The security guards, however, stood frozen. They were looking at the screens, their faces filled with disgust.
The lead federal officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.
“Valeria Galván,” the officer announced, his voice carrying over the silent room. “You are under arrest for attempted human trafficking under the guise of commercial exploitation, severe child abuse, illegal administration of controlled substances to a minor, and corporate fraud.”
“No! You can’t do this!” Valeria shrieked as the cold metal clicked around her wrists. She looked around the room, searching for her friends, her socialite allies, the people who had kissed her cheeks just minutes before.
But everyone turned away. Some took steps back as if her disgrace were contagious.
As she was dragged past Ricardo, she hissed, “You think you’ve won? I am his biological mother! No judge in this country will keep me from my son forever! I will drag your name through the mud!”

Ricardo didn’t even look at her. He looked past her, his eyes fixed on the horizon of her complete and total destruction.
“You aren't going to a regular prison, Valeria,” Ricardo said softly. “I have personally bought the debt of the holding company that owns your defense firm. Your lawyers work for me now. Your assets are frozen. Your brand is dead. You have nothing left.”
