Chapter 3 - The Courthouse Ambush

The marble corridors of the Cook County Family Court building smelled of floor wax, old paper, and quiet desperation.
Harper sat on a hard wooden bench in Gallery 4B, smoothing down the lapel of the modest navy blazer Mrs. Gable had quietly produced from the estate's private wardrobe vault that morning. Lily sat beside her, happily coloring a picture of a dog using a new pack of markers Vincent had provided.
A few feet away, Vincent stood leaning against the limestone pillar, his hands casually tucked into his trouser pockets, scrolling through a secure tablet. He looked like an executive waiting for a board meeting rather than a man about to obliterate his wife's gold-digging uncle in a custody dispute.
The heavy oak doors of Courtroom 4B swung open, and Uncle Richard stepped out into the hallway, flanked by his own attorney and a sleek-looking paralegal carrying two overflowing accordion folders.
Richard stopped dead in his tracks when he saw Harper sitting on the bench. His face, already ruddy from high blood pressure and cheap scotch, flushed a dark, angry crimson.
"Harper," Richard barked, marching straight toward them with his attorney trailing closely behind. "What kind of circus are you trying to pull here? My lawyer tells me some high-priced corporate firm filed an emergency intervention claiming you're... what, married?"
Harper stood up slowly, stepping in front of Lily’s drawing pad to shield her sister. "Good morning, Uncle Richard. Yes, my husband and I are quite settled."
Richard let out a harsh, barking laugh, looking past her toward Vincent. "Your husband? Who is this, a rent-a-boyfriend you hired off Craigslist to impress the judge?"
Vincent slowly lowered his tablet. He didn't raise his voice, and he didn't rush his movements as he stepped around the pillar, closing the distance between them until he towered a full four inches over Richard.
"My name is Vincent Romano," he said softly, each syllable falling like a lead weight on the marble floor. "And if you ever speak to my wife in that tone inside a public courthouse again, Richard, I will personally ensure your commercial real development licenses in Cook County are revoked before lunch."
Richard’s attorney immediately stepped forward, grabbing Richard’s elbow. "Mr. Romano? The... the logistics CEO?"
"The same," Vincent replied, never breaking eye contact with Richard, whose bravado was rapidly evaporating as realization set in. "Now, I suggest you take your briefcase, walk into Judge Miller's courtroom, and formally withdraw your petition before my legal team introduces the forensic audit of your recent property acquisitions into the public record."

Richard swallowed hard, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. He glared at Harper with pure, venomous hatred, realizing that the defenseless orphan he had planned to roll over had somehow enlisted an apex predator to guard the door.
"This isn't over," Richard hissed, turning on his heel and storming into the courtroom.
