Chapter 6 - The Real Ledger

By late evening, the storm had passed.

Arthur Sterling’s shares had been frozen pending a federal fraud investigation, the board had unanimously reaffirmed Vincent’s leadership without a single dissenting vote, and the corporate tower had finally quieted down as the cleaning crews moved in.

Back at the Lincoln Park estate, the house was warm and smelled faintly of vanilla and toasted marshmallows. Lily was fast asleep upstairs, her new dragon drawing safely taped to the inside of the pantry door.

Harper sat on the edge of the stone patio overlooking the dark, moonlit lawn, wrapped in a heavy wool throw.

Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path behind her.

Vincent walked out, carrying two mugs of hot chamomile tea. He handed one to Harper before sitting down on the bench beside her, resting his arm along the backrest.

"You destroyed Arthur in under five minutes," Vincent noted, a warm, quiet amusement in his voice. "Marcus Vance is still drafting memos about your auditing methodology."

Harper took a sip of the tea, letting the warmth spread through her chest. "Arthur was lazy. People who inherit their power usually are. They think titles make them invincible, so they never bother to check the actual numbers."

"And you?" Vincent asked softly, turning his head to look at her in the dim moonlight. "What do the numbers say about us now, Harper?"

Harper turned to face him. The months of fear, exhaustion, and survival had finally melted away from her features, leaving behind a quiet, radiant strength that took his breath away.

"The initial contract was supposed to be a business arrangement," Harper said quietly. "A marriage of convenience to save Lily and protect your trust."

"It was," Vincent agreed, his dark eyes intense and unblinking. "But contracts can be amended."

He reached out, his warm fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her face, his touch lingering against her cheek.

"I didn't plan on falling in love with the girl who held a coffee mug like a weapon at three in the morning," Vincent murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "And I certainly didn't plan on realizing that my life was completely empty before you and Lily walked through those doors."

Harper placed her hand over his, feeling the steady, strong pulse beneath his wrist.

"The contract doesn't need any amendments, Vincent," she smiled, leaning closer into his warmth. "Because the numbers finally balance out. We’re home."

And for the first time in her life, Harper knew the balance would never be broken again.
