Chapter 4 - The Delusion Cracks

For thirty agonizing seconds, the only sound in the beautiful oceanfront home was the distant, mocking crash of the Pacific waves outside.

Grant finally found his voice, though it cracked pathetically around the edges. He forced a weak, pleading smile, stepping toward Tessa with his hands raised in a placating gesture.

"Tessa... babe... let's not be dramatic," Grant coaxed, his tone dripping with desperate false intimacy. "Look, I know things have been stressful. You're overwhelmed by the move, and maybe mom and I coming in all at once was a bit sudden. We can talk about this like adults. You don't need to involve process servers and police officers over a family disagreement. Come on, put the coffee down, let's go into the kitchen, and we'll figure out a schedule that works for everyone."

The two sheriff's deputies didn't move an inch, remaining entirely neutral, their professional training preventing them from reacting to the domestic trainwreck unfolding before them.

Tessa didn't flinch. She didn't step back. She simply met Grant's panicked eyes with a gaze so utterly devoid of warmth that it made him physically recoil.

"There is nothing to discuss, Grant," Tessa said, her voice remarkably steady. "You called it a family disagreement. I call it a business termination. You and your mother have forty-eight hours. Not a minute more."

Darlene’s face turned a violent, mottled shade of crimson. The fragile veneer of upper-class sophistication she always tried to project dissolved entirely, revealing the bitter, vicious woman underneath.

"You cold-hearted, manipulative witch!" Darlene shrieked, taking a furious step forward as if she actually intended to physically assault Tessa. "You lured my son into marriage, you hoard your secret wealth like a greedy little dragon, and now you're throwing us out onto the street?! After everything Grant has done for you! After all the success he's brought into your pathetic little life!"

"Success?" Tessa repeated, a sharp, humorless laugh escaping her lips. "What success, Darlene? Grant's real estate company hasn't closed a single profitable deal in three years. His designer suits were bought with my salary. His leased SUV was paid for with my credit cards. The only thing Grant has ever brought into my life is debt, disrespect, and you."

Grant flinched as if he had been physically struck. For a man whose entire identity was built on the illusion of wealth and superiority, having his failures laid bare in front of police officers and his own mother was an intolerable agony.

"Tessa, shut up!" Grant roared, his mask of charm shredding completely as his face twisted in humiliated fury. "You have no right! You humiliated me! You think because your dead grandmother left you some dirty money you can treat me like garbage?! I am your husband! You belong to me! You obey me!"

The moment the words left Grant's mouth, the senior sheriff's deputy stepped forward, placing a firm, cautionary hand on his baton belt.

"Sir, I suggest you watch your tone and keep your hands to yourself," the deputy warned, his voice deep and authoritative. "The property owner has made her legal position entirely clear. Any further threats or intimidation will result in immediate arrest for disturbing the peace and criminal harassment."

Grant swallowed hard, the color draining entirely from his face as he realized the full, terrifying extent of his powerlessness. The police weren't here to mediate a marital dispute; they were here to enforce property rights—and Tessa held every single card.

"You're making a massive mistake, Tessa," Grant whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer panic. "When I walk out that door, we are done. Do you hear me? Completely done. You will never see me again, and you will rot in this lonely house by yourself."

"Promise?" Tessa replied softly.

May you like

Grant stared at her, utterly defeated. He looked down at the legal notice clutched in his trembling fingers, then looked at his mother, whose face was twisted in an ugly mask of pure hatred.

"Pack your bags, Mom," Grant muttered bitterly, turning his back on Tessa and walking down the hall toward the master bedroom. "We're leaving."
