Chapter 5 - The Clearing of the Decoys

The next forty-eight hours were a masterclass in chaotic humiliation.

Wordlessly, refusing to speak another syllable to Tessa, Grant and Darlene spent the remainder of the day hauling their belongings out of the oceanfront home. Neighbors from down the rocky Newport coastline stood on their balconies, watching with undisguised curiosity as Grant’s leased silver SUV was loaded down far past its weight capacity with storage bins, lamps, and Darlene’s endless array of garment bags.

Darlene glared daggers at Tessa every time she walked past the front porch, muttering venomous curses under her breath, while Grant moved with the hollow, mechanical stiffness of a man whose entire reality had just collapsed.

They didn't even pack the guest bedroom properly; they simply threw everything into trash bags and tossed them into the back seat.

By the time the forty-eight-hour deadline struck at exactly 8:00 AM on the second day, the driveway was completely empty.

Tessa stood on the wide wooden deck, watching the taillights of Grant’s SUV disappear down the coastal highway until they vanished completely behind a bend in the road.

The silence that followed was absolute.

No television blaring. No toxic criticism echoing down the hallway. No patronizing sighs from a man who considered her existence secondary to his ambitions.

Just the wind, the salt air, and the endless, magnificent crash of the Pacific waves against the shore.

Tessa walked back inside, took a deep breath of the cedar-scented air, and walked down the hall to the master bedroom. She stripped the sheets Darlene had slept on, bundling them up and tossing them straight into the garbage. She opened the windows wide, letting the ocean breeze scour every last trace of their presence from the room.

Then, she called a professional cleaning service and a locksmith.

Within four hours, every lock on the exterior doors was completely replaced with high-security deadbolts, and the interior was scrubbed down, sanitized, and restored to pristine perfection.

That evening, Tessa uncorked a bottle of crisp white wine, poured a glass, and walked out onto the deck as the sun began to sink below the horizon, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of violet, gold, and crimson.

She sat in the wooden rocking chair her grandmother had loved, listening to the ocean sing its ancient song.

She was completely alone. And for the first time in her entire adult life, she had never felt more free.

She thought the story was over. She thought she had won her peace, purged the parasites from her life, and secured her sanctuary forever.

She had severely underestimated just how far a desperate man with a shattered ego would go when he realized he had lost his meal ticket.
