Chapter 4 - The Trojan HorseThe rain started around 4:00 PM, turning the suburban streets of Oakridge Lane into slick, glistening ribbons of asphalt under the grey evening sky.

Marcus Vance’s house looked peaceful from the outside. The manicured lawn, the white picket fence, the empty garden bed where the dirt had already been hastily shoveled back into place by his hired landscapers earlier that morning.

Inside, however, the atmosphere was thick with mounting paranoia.

Marcus stood in his home office, pacing across the expensive Persian rug, his phone pressed to his ear for the fourth time in ten minutes.

"What do you mean the motion was denied?" Marcus snapped into the receiver, his voice tight with suppressed rage. "I want a federal injunction! My wife is unstable; she's hiding out with radical activists who are trying to alienate me from my unborn child!"

On the other end of the line, his high-priced defense attorney sighed heavily. "Marcus, listen to me very carefully. The district attorney’s office just contacted us. They have the audio file. They’ve verified the meta-data. And worse... a federal investigator from the SEC just pulled up a file regarding your uncle's trust fund. You need to pack a bag right now. We are negotiating a surrender, but you need to make yourself scarce before the local precinct executes the warrant."

Marcus went entirely still. The phone slipped slightly from his ear.

The trust fund. How did they find out about that? Only he and his dead-to-rights accountant knew about the offshore routing.

Panic, cold and sharp, replaced his arrogant confidence. He slammed the phone down onto the mahogany desk, rushed to the wall safe behind the oil painting, spun the dial with frantic fingers, and pulled out a heavy canvas bag stuffed with passports, bearer bonds, and emergency cash.

He didn't care about the house anymore. He didn't care about the neighbors, or the media, or even the baby. Marcus Vance cared about only one thing: self-preservation.

He grabbed his car keys off the kitchen counter, threw open the back door, and bolted toward his black SUV parked in the driveway.

He pulled the car door open, threw his bag into the passenger seat, and dropped himself behind the steering wheel. He reached for the ignition button—

"Going somewhere, Marcus?"

The voice came from the backseat.

Marcus froze, his hand hovering over the dashboard. His blood turned to ice water in his veins. Slowly, terrifyingly, he turned his head and looked in the rearview mirror.

Sitting in the backseat shadow, wearing a dark cap and holding a secure laptop displaying a live feed of the estate’s security cameras, was Daniel Vance. His younger brother. The ghost Marcus thought he had buried financially forever.

"Daniel..." Marcus choked out, his voice cracking into a pathetic squeak. "What... what are you doing here?"

"Just checking in on the family business, big brother," Daniel said softly, a cold, humorless smile touching his lips. "Looks like your empire is having a bit of structural failure."

Before Marcus could lunge back or scream, the driver's side door was wrenched open with explosive force.

Four uniformed officers swarmed the vehicle, their flashlights cutting through the dim interior like searchlights. Hands gripped Marcus by the shoulders, dragging him out of the leather driver's seat and slamming him hard against the side of his own SUV.

"Marcus Vance! You are under arrest for aggravated domestic assault, felony coercion, and federal wire fraud!"

The metal click of handcuffs echoed in the rainy driveway. As they shoved him face-down onto the wet pavement—the exact same driveway where he had terrorized me hours earlier—Marcus looked up, spitting mud, his eyes wide with frantic rage.

"She set me up! This is a conspiracy! Maya ruined everything!" he screamed into the asphalt.

Detective Vance stepped out from behind a cruiser, looking down at him with quiet disgust. "No, Marcus. You built the trap. You just finally fell into it."
