Chapter 5 - The ReckoningThe courtroom of the county municipal district was packed to the gills.

Three weeks had passed since the night in the garden. My ribs were still healing, and the emotional scars ran deep, but as I sat in the front row beside my sister Elena and Judge Evelyn Thorne, I felt a lightness in my chest I hadn't known in years.

Marcus sat at the defense table wearing an orange jumpsuit, flanked by two public defenders who looked like they wanted nothing more than to dissolve into the woodwork. His high-priced legal team had abandoned him the moment the federal indictments for financial fraud were unsealed alongside the domestic violence charges.

Judge Katherine Sterling—no relation to Victoria or the previous victims of toxic marriages, a legendary no-nonsense jurist—looked down from her elevated mahogany bench with eyes like flint.

"The court has reviewed all physical evidence, audio meta-data verified by independent federal forensics, financial ledger trails, and witness testimony from neighbor Claire Jenkins and federal investigators," Judge Sterling announced, her voice echoing clearly through the vaulted ceiling.

She turned her gaze directly toward the defense table.

"Marcus Vance, your conduct represents a textbook campaign of calculated domestic terrorism, physical abuse, and financial manipulation designed to strip an individual of their autonomy and safety. Furthermore, your attempt to weaponize the legal system against your spouse while covering up felony embezzlement constitutes an egregious betrayal of public trust."

Marcus stared straight ahead, his jaw clenched, refusing to look at me. The arrogance that had once defined him was completely gone, replaced by the hollow, trapped stare of a cornered animal.

"On the charges of aggravated domestic assault and attempted feticide, this court sentences you to twenty-five years in federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole," Judge Sterling read clearly. "On the concurrent federal indictments for wire fraud and interstate financial embezzlement, an additional fifteen years will be added. Court is adjourned."

Bangs the gavel.

The sound was sharp, definitive, and final.

The gallery erupted in a low murmur of collective release. Elena reached over, grabbing my hand and squeezing it until our fingers ached. Tears streamed down my face, but for the first time, they weren't tears of fear—they were tears of absolute, unadulterated freedom.

As the bailiffs hauled Marcus away in chains, he briefly turned his head toward the front row. His eyes locked onto mine for one split second. There was no remorse there—only a cold, impotent hatred.

I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I squared my shoulders, placed my hand gently over my growing stomach, and stared right back at him until the heavy oak doors closed between us forever.
