Chapter 2 - The Cold Room

The sterile scent of antiseptic and the steady, rhythmic beep of medical monitors brought me back from the dark.
Beep... Beep... Beep...
I opened my eyes slowly. The harsh fluorescent lighting of the hospital room felt cool and soothing against my aching eyelids. A cool mist humidifier hummed in the corner, and soft, air-conditioned air washed over my blanket.
I immediately pressed my right hand against my belly.
"Easy, Claire," a gentle, familiar voice said from the bedside.
I turned my head. Ethan sat in a leather armchair beside my bed, his tactical vest removed, wearing a simple dark long-sleeved shirt. His eyes were bloodshot, dark shadows hanging beneath them, but his hands were steady as he reached over to hold mine.
"The baby...?" I whispered, my voice sounding like dry paper.
"She’s okay, Claire," Ethan said, his voice softening with immense relief as he squeezed my fingers. "The doctors managed to bring your core temperature down before any brain or organ damage occurred. Fetal heart rate is stable. The obstetrician checked her twenty minutes ago—she's a fighter, just like her mother."
Tears of sheer, overwhelming relief spilled over my eyelashes, cold against my warm cheeks. I pulled Ethan’s hand against my forehead, sobbing quietly into his palm.
"I tried to stay strong, Ethan," I choked out. "I tried to hold out until you got there... but the heat... the locked door..."
"Shh," Ethan murmured, leaning forward to kiss the top of my head. "You did everything right, Claire. You hit the beacon. You survived. Now you let me handle the rest."
A soft knock sounded at the hospital room door.
A tall woman in a sharp navy business suit stepped inside, carrying a thick leather briefcase. Her silver hair was pulled back into a tight, professional bun, and her steel-blue eyes held a look of absolute, formidable intelligence.
This was Eleanor Vance—the managing senior partner of Vance, Sterling & Associates, the most lethal matrimonial and criminal litigation firm in the state. She was a woman who charged a thousand dollars an hour and had brought down corrupt politicians and billionaire executives alike.
"Claire," Ethan said gently. "This is Eleanor. I retained her the moment the chopper touched down on the hospital helipad."
Eleanor Vance stepped up to the bed, offering a warm, professional smile before setting her briefcase on the table.
"Mrs. Carter," Eleanor said softly. "I am deeply sorry for what you have endured, but I want to assure you that as of three hours ago, your life as Daniel Pierce’s victim is officially over."
I looked from Eleanor to Ethan. "What's happening?"
Eleanor opened her briefcase and pulled out a stack of stamped legal documents bearing the official seal of the State District Court.
"While you were in the trauma bay," Eleanor explained, tapping the top page, "we executed a series of emergency legal actions. First, I obtained an ex parte Emergency Protection Order signed by Judge Harrison. Daniel, Vivian, and Grant Pierce are legally barred from coming within one thousand feet of you, your baby, or your brother."
"Where is Daniel now?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat.
"He was taken into custody at your residence two hours ago by the County Sheriff's Department," Eleanor revealed coldly. "The footage captured by Ethan’s tactical team—along with the satellite audio logs—clearly shows Daniel locking you out in triple-digit heat while ignoring your medical distress."
"What are the charges?"
"Attempted Deprivation of Medical Care, Felony Domestic Reckless Endangerment, and Aggravated Assault on a Pregnant Person," Eleanor listed off cleanly. "The District Attorney reviewed the video logs thirty minutes ago and personally authorized the arrest warrants."
I sank back against my pillows, the sheer reality of what was happening washing over me. For three years, Daniel had convinced me that he was untouchable—that his family's money, his father's banking connections, and his mother's social status made them invincible.
"He thinks he can buy his way out," I whispered. "Grant has money. He’ll pay the bail before midnight."
Eleanor Vance chuckled—a quiet, terrifying sound that made me realize why high-powered executives feared her.
"Grant Pierce's money is currently undergoing a very thorough, very uncomfortable forensic audit," Eleanor said, pulling a second file from her bag. "Your brother’s intelligence wing spent the last four hours digging through the public and private corporate filings of Pierce Financial Holdings."
"What did you find?" Ethan asked, looking up at Eleanor.
"Grant Pierce has been using his offshore shell companies to hide toxic assets from federal regulators," Eleanor stated flatly. "And Daniel? Daniel’s lifestyle—his sports car, his expensive suits, the very house you were locked out of—was funded through a series of fraudulent wire transfers from a trust fund set up under your name after your father passed away."
My eyes went wide. "My father's trust? Daniel told me that trust was empty! He said my father left nothing!"
"Your father left you two point five million dollars, Claire," Ethan revealed, his voice dropping into an angry rumble. "Daniel and his father altered the power of attorney documents six months after your wedding. They've been draining your inheritance to pay for their family's debt."
I covered my face with my hands, my chest heaving as tears of shock and fury spilled through my fingers. All those times Vivian called me 'charity'... all those times Grant smirked and said I married up... they were living on my father's hard-earned legacy while treating me like an unpaid servant.

Ethan placed his hand on my shoulder, his grip warm and unshakeable.
"Don't cry for them, Claire," Ethan said softly. "They built their whole house out of cards and lies. Now we're going to blow it down."
