Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Pierces

The next three months swept by like a relentless avalanche, crushing every foundation the Pierce family had spent decades building on lies.
The news of the federal investigation into Pierce Financial Holdings broke on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.
Grant Pierce was formally indicted on eleven counts of Federal Bank Fraud, Tax Evasion, and Money Laundering. His assets were permanently frozen, his country club membership was revoked, and his name was scrubbed from every charitable board in the city.
Vivian, unable to afford the taxes on her luxury vehicles or her pristine lifestyle, was forced to move into a modest two-bedroom rented townhouse on the outskirts of town—the very neighborhood she had once sneered at as "beneath her standards."
And Daniel stood trial in the State Superior Court.
The trial lasted four days, drawing massive media coverage due to the dramatic nature of the backyard video logs captured by Sentinel Ridge.
I sat in the front row of the gallery every single day, dressed impeccably, my pregnant belly growing fuller and rounder as my due date approached. Beside me sat Ethan, a constant, unshakeable wall of support.
On the final day of the trial, Daniel took the witness stand in a desperate attempt to gain sympathy from the jury.
"I never intended to hurt my wife!" Daniel cried from the stand, wiping his nose with a handkerchief, looking pathetically toward the jury box. "It was an unusually hot day! I was distracted by family drama! I thought she was just feeling dramatic! I love my daughter! I want to be a father to my child!"
Eleanor Vance stood up from the prosecution table, holding a small remote control in her hand.
"Your Honor," Eleanor said calmly, "I request permission to play Exhibit 4-B once more for the jury."
"Granted," the judge ruled.
Eleanor pressed a button. The large high-definition screens mounted around the courtroom flickered to life.
The crystal-clear audio and video recorded by Ethan’s tactical team played through the courtroom speakers:
[Visual: Claire lying motionless on the scorching black patio stone, skin dry and flushed.]
[Audio - Daniel's voice through the glass]: "Look at her. A total theatrical performance because I asked her to cook lunch. She thinks if she faints, I'll run out there and play the hero."
[Audio - Vivian's voice]: "She’s throwing a temper tantrum, Daniel. Women from her background always use weakness as a weapon."
[Audio - Daniel]: "Flip the burgers, Claire! The smoke is ruining my mother's hair!"
The jury members looked at the screen, then turned their heads to glare at Daniel with absolute, icy contempt. Two female jurors shook their heads in disgust.
Daniel bowed his head, sobbing silently on the stand, realizing that no speech, no high-priced defense attorney, and no excuse could ever undo the horror captured in those three minutes of footage.
The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
When they returned to the courtroom, the foreperson stood tall.
"On Count One, Aggravated Assault on a Pregnant Person, we find the defendant, Daniel Pierce, GUILTY. On Count Two, Felony Reckless Endangerment, GUILTY. On Count Three, Fraudulent Conversion of Trust Assets, GUILTY."
The judge slammed her gavel down with a loud THUD.
"Daniel Pierce," Judge Harrison declared, her eyes cold as ice. "Your actions were devoid of basic human empathy, decency, and care for your own unborn child. I sentence you to eight years in the State Correctional Facility, with no eligibility for parole for the first five years."
Daniel collapsed forward onto the defense table, weeping hysterically as the Sheriff’s Deputies pulled his arms behind his back and clicked heavy steel handcuffs over his wrists.

As he was led away in chains toward the side holding cell, Daniel looked back at me one last time through the court glass.
I didn't look away. I didn't cry. I simply held my hand over my belly, feeling my baby kick strong and healthy beneath my palm, watching my former tormentor dragged into the dark.
