Chapter 2 - Tactical Triage

The intrusion of cold, clinical reality was the first thing Claire felt. The blinding heat of the patio had been replaced by the steady, rhythmic hum of a mobile medical transport vehicle. An oxygen mask was secured over her face, delivering a cool, life-giving flow to her lungs, while a private emergency physician monitored the fetal heart rate monitor attached to her abdomen.
"The core temperature is dropping, Ethan," the doctor reported, his voice steady but urgent. "We’ve administered intravenous cooling fluids. The heatstroke was severe, but we caught it right at the threshold of neurological damage. The baby’s heart rate is stabilizing, but we need to keep her under absolute observation at the private medical facility."
Claire turned her head weakly, her vision clearing just enough to see her brother sitting beside her gurney. Ethan’s face looked as though it had been carved from granite, his knuckles white where he held her hand.
"Ethan..." Claire whispered beneath the mask, her voice raw.
"Don't speak, Claire," Ethan murmured, his voice softening with a profound, protective warmth. "You're safe. The baby is safe. Sentinel Ridge has the entire facility locked down. Daniel and his parents are currently standing on their front lawn surrounded by federal enforcement attorneys."
The Harris Estate – Synchronous TimelineTen minutes earlier, Daniel had attempted to regain his composure on the ruined patio. His father, Grant, had finally stepped outside, his face red with aristocratic indignation as he looked at the armed security operators occupying his son's property.
"Do you know who I am?!" Grant shouted at the lead operator, his voice shaking. "I am the senior partner of Harris Financial! I have the mayor on speed dial! This is an illegal home invasion! I will see every single one of your men stripped of their private licenses by sunset!"
Ethan walked slowly up the patio steps, his boots crushing a piece of discarded charcoal. He stood inches from Grant, looking down into the older man's face with a level of absolute, unyielding dominance that made the wealthy patriarch instinctively step back.
"Your son locked my pregnant sister outside in 100-degree heat to cook for you," Ethan said, his voice dropping to a temperature that made Daniel shiver despite the summer air. "You stood behind the glass and filmed her while she collapsed from heatstroke. You didn't call an ambulance. You didn't open the door. You let her fall."
"It was a domestic misunderstanding!" Daniel stammered, his eyes darting toward the armed men lining the perimeter. "She was being dramatic, Ethan! Ask my mother! We were just waiting for her to finish. This is my property! You can't just march in here!"
"This property was purchased using a hidden bridge loan secured through my corporate real estate division, Daniel," Ethan said, pulling a leather-bound file from his tactical vest and tossing it onto the table. "A loan that you defaulted on exactly forty-eight hours ago due to unauthorized asset diversion. You don't own this house. You don't even own the car in your driveway."

Ethan turned to his lead operator. "Secure the video evidence from Vivian’s phone. If she attempts to delete the footage of my sister's collapse, arrest her for destruction of evidence in a federal investigation. We’re moving Claire to the primary facility. Leave the trash behind."
Vivian screamed as a female operator calmly but firmly confiscated her smartphone, bagging it in a secure static envelope. The illusion of the untouchable Harris dynasty had cracked in less than fifteen minutes, and the true nightmare for Daniel was only just beginning.
