Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Shakes

The corporate headquarters of the Harris Financial Group was a monument to old money and unearned arrogance. But at 10:00 AM on Monday morning, the glass tower felt less like a palace and more like a sinking ship.
Grant Harris sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table, his face white, his sweat-stained collar open as he screamed into his desk phone. Beside him, Daniel paced the room like a trapped animal, his fingers twitching violently against the gold casing of his watch.
"What do you mean the credit facility is suspended?!" Grant roared at the bank representative on the line. "We have a twenty-year history with your institution! We have the municipal bond settlement closing this Friday! If those accounts aren't released by noon, we will default on the city contract!"
"Mr. Harris, I am reading an executive order signed by the regional director of the Securities and Exchange Commission," the banker’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, detached, and entirely devoid of sympathy. "Your firm is currently under an emergency forensic audit for systemic wire fraud and asset diversion. All corporate lines of credit are permanently revoked pending the outcome of the federal investigation. Good day."
The line went dead.
Grant slammed the receiver down, his breathing ragged as he turned to his son. "This is your wife's doing, Daniel! That quiet, pathetic girl you claimed you had under total control! She didn't just leave—she took the entire structural ledger with her!"
"She’s a schoolteacher's daughter, Father!" Daniel shrieked, his voice cracking with a raw, ugly panic. "She doesn't know how to navigate the federal banking laws! It’s her brother, Ethan. That 'glorified parking lot security firm' he runs... it’s not a security firm. My attorneys checked the corporate registry this morning. Sentinel Ridge is a primary defense contractor for the Department of Justice. They have direct access to the federal data networks."
The double doors of the boardroom swung open with a loud, authoritative click.
Vivian Harris stumbled into the room, her silver bracelets clinking frantically as she clutched a printed news report to her chest. Her face was completely stripped of its aristocratic poise, her makeup smeared from tears of rage.
"Grant! Daniel! Look at the television!" she gasped, pointing toward the large monitor on the wall.
The financial news network was broadcasting a live feed from the steps of the Federal Courthouse downtown. A prominent federal prosecutor stood before a wall of microphones, holding a copy of the very static envelope containing Vivian’s phone video.
LIVE BROADCAST: DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE PRESS CONFERENCE "Today, federal authorities have unsealed a multi-count indictment against Grant, Vivian, and Daniel Harris for corporate racketeering, wire fraud, and grand larceny. Furthermore, state prosecutors have filed felony charges against Daniel Harris for depraved indifference and domestic assault, backed by undeniable, high-definition video evidence capturing a pattern of physical cruelty within the family residence."
"No..." Vivian whispered, collapsing into one of the leather chairs. "This can't be happening. We are the Harrises. We built this city's financial sector. They can't treat us like common criminals."
"The video..." Daniel stammered, his face turning an unhinged, violent shade of red as he remembered his mother filming Claire on the patio. "Mother... you told me to smile for the camera! You said it would prove she was being dramatic!"

"You locked a pregnant woman out in 100-degree heat, Daniel!" Grant roared, finally turning on his own son in a desperate bid to save himself. "You brought this disaster into my boardroom! You've ruined us!"
Before Daniel could respond, the heavy alarms of the building began to wail. The elevators in the executive lobby opened, and twenty federal agents dressed in dark blue jackets bearing the bright, yellow letters of the FBI swarmed the floor, their search warrants drawn and ready to dismantle the empire piece by piece.
