Chapter 2 - Inside the Lion’s DenThe drive down the mountain felt like a descent into another world.

Cara sat in the back of the spacious SUV, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket one of the guards had silently handed her. Through the tinted windows, she watched the winding roads slip past until the rustic mountain pass gave way to the towering skyscrapers and neon lights of downtown Chicago’s elite financial district.

They didn't stop at a hospital, despite the cut on Dante's temple and the raw abrasions on Cara's hands. Instead, the convoy turned through massive wrought-iron security gates guarded by private sentries, pulling up beneath the sprawling, gothic-revival stone portico of a sprawling private estate nestled behind high estate walls.

It was a fortress.

Dante climbed out of the vehicle first, his face impassive despite the rain. He walked around and opened Cara's door himself, extending a hand to help her out.

“Where are we?” Cara asked, her voice tight with nervous energy as she stepped onto the polished cobblestone courtyard.

“My home,” Dante replied simply. “Outside of these walls, my enemies believe I died in that ravine tonight. Until I figure out who helped Vanessa orchestrate this little accident, I need you where I can see you. And frankly, so do you.”

As they walked through the grand double doors of the foyer, the magnitude of Dante Moretti’s wealth and power became staggering. High ceilings, classical art adorning mahogany-paneled walls, and soft amber lighting created an atmosphere of timeless, aristocratic luxury.

An older woman with silver hair pulled back into a neat bun hurried down the grand staircase, her face pale with worry.

“Dante! Holy Mother of God, your phone went dead, we heard reports of a crash on Route 9—!” She stopped abruptly when she saw Cara standing beside him, dripping wet, bleeding, and wrapped in a blanket.

“I’m fine, Elena,” Dante interrupted smoothly, shrugging off his ruined jacket and handing it to a nearby servant. “Call Dr. Vance. Have him come to the west wing immediately. And prepare the guest suite next to my study for Ms. Fields.”

Elena’s eyes widened as she looked from Dante to Cara, taking in the bloodstains and the sheer impossibility of an ordinary waitress standing in the inner sanctum of the Moretti household.

“She’s staying here?” Elena asked, her tone carefully measured.

“Indefinitely,” Dante said, his voice leaving zero room for argument. He turned his gray eyes back to Cara, softening just a fraction. “Go with Elena, Cara. Get cleaned up, get those cuts treated, and put on something dry. We have a lot to discuss once the sun comes up.”

Ten minutes later, Cara found herself in a guest bedroom larger than her entire downtown apartment. The bathroom featured a massive marble soaking tub and heated floors. As she washed the dried blood and mud from her hands, she stared at her reflection in the gilded mirror.

Her life as an anonymous, struggling waitress at Bellini's was officially over. By saving Dante Moretti’s life, she had stepped off the edge of a cliff of her own—and there was no climbing back.
