Chapter 3 - The Gathering StormBy 9:00 a.m. the following morning, the sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting sharp beams of light across the manicured gardens outside the Moretti estate.

Cara sat at a small mahogany desk in the corner of Dante’s private study, nursing a cup of black coffee. Her hands were bandaged neatly with antiseptic gauze, courtesy of Dr. Vance, who had departed an hour earlier.

The heavy oak door swung open, and Dante walked in. He had changed into a crisp, charcoal-gray three-piece suit, his silver-streaked dark hair neatly combed, completely masking the violent ordeal of the previous night save for a faint, dark bruise near his left temple.

“You’re up early,” Dante noted, pouring himself a cup of coffee from the silver service tray on his desk.

“It’s hard to sleep when you realize you’re trapped in a mafia boss’s mansion with a target on your back,” Cara replied dryly, setting her mug down and turning to face him.

Dante let out a short, humorless bark of laughter. He walked over and sat in the leather armchair opposite her, resting his elbows on his knees.

“Fair point,” he admitted. “My security detail has already checked the restaurant logs. According to the shift manager at Bellini's, you walked out mid-shift last night without a word, abandoning your apron and your tips. As far as the public—and my wife—knows, Cara Fields vanished into thin air.”

Cara’s breath caught. “Vanessa thinks I vanished?”

“Vanessa thinks I am currently resting at the bottom of a ravine, and that her lover is busy dividing up my shipping terminals,” Dante said, his gray eyes narrowing into cold, lethal slits. “Which brings us to the present situation. My security team searched Vanessa’s private communications early this morning. They found encrypted burner-phone transmissions routed through an offshore shell company.”

He slid a sleek black tablet across the desk toward Cara.

On the screen was a bank transfer receipt totaling two million dollars, dated yesterday afternoon, originating from an account tied to Vance Shipping & Logistics.

Cara gasped. “Vance? That’s... that’s run by Richard Vance. He was the man sitting with Vanessa in the private booth last night.”

“Richard Vance,” Dante repeated, rolling the name over his tongue like a foul taste. “A minor competitor in the import-export business who has been trying to muscle in on my dock contracts for two years. He thought buying my wife’s affection and cutting my brakes would give him a monopoly on the harbor.”

“What are you going to do?” Cara asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Dante stood up slowly, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the estate’s sprawling private courtyard.

“What any betrayed husband and businessman does,” Dante said softly, turning back to look at her with a chilling, predatory smile. “I’m going to let them think they won. For the next forty-eight hours, the city will mourn the tragic, accidental death of Dante Moretti. And while they are celebrating their victory, I am going to dismantle Richard Vance’s empire brick by brick—with you by my side.”

“By my side?” Cara echoed, standing up in alarm. “I’m a waitress, Mr. Moretti! I don't know anything about corporate espionage or turf wars!”

“You have a photographic memory for conversations you overhear in noisy restaurants, and you have the moral courage to risk your life to save a stranger,” Dante countered, closing the distance between them until he stood just a foot away. “In my world, that makes you more qualified than ninety percent of my board of directors. Besides... you’re the only person in this city I know I can trust.”
