Chapter 5 - The Midnight Board Meeting

The executive boardroom on the top floor of Caruso Tower in downtown Chicago was pitch black except for the glowing neon lights of the city skyline piercing through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
At 2:00 A.M., the heavy oak doors unlocked with a digital beep, and Dominic Caruso stepped inside, flanked by two armed enforcers. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, his silver tie slightly loosened, his expression a mask of cold arrogance as he walked toward the head of the mahogany table where the emergency proxy vote documents were laid out waiting for his signature.
“Get those New York transfer papers ready,” Dominic snapped to his lead enforcer. “Once the board signs off at sunrise, the waterfront is ours.”
“I’m afraid the board’s schedule just got moved up, Dominic,” a deep, resonant voice echoed from the shadows near the far window.
Dominic froze.
The enforcers instantly drew their weapons, spinning around as Alessandro stepped out from the darkness into the amber glow of the city lights. He wasn't wearing a suit tonight; he wore a tactical black turtleneck and heavy boots, looking every bit the ruthless syndicate boss the newspapers whispered about in hushed tones.
Behind him walked Emma, carrying a secure laptop and a heavy stack of printed audit reports.
“Al...” Dominic gasped, color draining entirely from his face. “How... you were dead. Julian signed the papers—the heart monitor flatlined—”
“Julian is currently enjoying a very long, very uncomfortable interrogation in the Belmont basement,” Alessandro interrupted smoothly, walking closer to the table. “And you, dear brother, are looking at a very severe case of corporate restructuring.”
Dominic’s panic quickly curdled into desperate rage. He motioned frantically to his enforcers. “Kill him! He’s just one man—kill him right now and let’s take the building!”
The two enforcers raised their pistols, but before they could squeeze the trigger, the boardroom doors flew open behind them.
Frank Calder and four armed security operatives flooded the room, their weapons instantly trained on Dominic’s men. A cold, metallic click echoed twice as the enforcers realized they were outgunned and outmatched. They dropped their weapons to the floor, raising their hands slowly.
Dominic backed up against the mahogany table, his chest heaving. “You can’t do this! I own half the proxies! I have the New York syndicate backing my board seats!”
“You have nothing,” Alessandro said, stopping three feet away from his brother.
Emma stepped forward, placing the thick stack of audit reports and her open laptop directly onto the table in front of Dominic.
“Here is your portfolio, Mr. Caruso,” Emma said, her voice steady and crystal clear in the cavernous room. “Every shell company, every diverted shipping manifest, every unauthorized asset transfer to the Moretti family, and every bribe paid to municipal officials over the last two years. Copied, timestamped, and transmitted directly to the federal prosecutor’s office and the SEC compliance division five minutes ago.”
Dominic stared at the papers, his hands trembling as he realized the absolute, inescapable magnitude of his defeat. He had tried to bury his brother alive, but he had only succeeded in burying himself.

Alessandro didn't yell. He didn't raise a hand. He simply looked at Dominic with a cold, devastating disappointment.
“Take him away, Frank,” Alessandro instructed quietly. “And make sure the federal marshals waiting in the lobby get every single file Ms. Sterling prepared.”
