Chapter 6 - A New Balance on the River

Six months later, the autumn wind whipped across the upper deck of the Caruso private yacht as it drifted quietly along the Chicago River, watching the sun set behind the glittering downtown skyline.
The transition had been brutal, swift, and absolute. The federal indictments against Dominic and his co-conspirators had dismantled the corrupt factions of the syndicate within weeks. The New York Moretti family, facing a unified and ruthless Caruso enterprise under Alessandro’s direct command, had quietly retreated back across state lines.
At the stern of the yacht, Emma Sterling leaned against the polished teak railing, a warm cashmere wrap draped over her shoulders, sipping a glass of dry white wine.
Footsteps approached softly from behind.
Alessandro stepped up beside her, handing her a thick, heavy manila envelope bearing the official seal of the State University Board of Examiners.
Emma looked down at the envelope, her breath catching in her throat. She slowly tore open the seal and pulled out the official certificate: Master of Science in Forensic Accounting and Corporate Compliance — Summa Cum Laude.
“How did you—” Emma looked up at him, her eyes wide with shock.
“When you audit a multi-billion-dollar logistics empire, you tend to have a bit of leverage with university administration boards,” Alessandro smiled, a rare, warm expression that completely transformed his rugged features. “Your final thesis was submitted and graded last Tuesday. You graduated top of your class, Ms. Sterling.”
Emma laughed, a bright, genuine sound that drifted out over the water. She turned her body toward him, resting her hands against the lapel of his tailored wool coat.
“And my new job?” Emma raised an eyebrow playfully. “Does the chief internal auditor of Caruso Holdings get dental benefits, or do I still have to dodge bullets for extra pay?”
Alessandro wrapped his arms securely around her waist, pulling her close against his chest as the city lights flickered to life around them.
May you like
“You get full health benefits, a corner office on the top floor of Caruso Tower, and a permanent contract,” Alessandro murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before meeting her eyes with absolute, unwavering devotion. “And as for dodging bullets—I promised you when I pulled you into that office that I would keep you safe. I intend to spend the rest of my life making sure I keep that promise.”
Emma smiled, leaning up to seal the promise with a kiss that needed no audits, no ledgers, and no translation at all.
