Chapter 3 - Public Exposure

By Thursday morning, the story had exploded across every major news network and social media platform in the Midwest.

The initial reports of vandalism had evolved into a massive, multi-layered scandal. Investigative journalists uncovered the shocking reality: Chelsea Miller, a high-ranking corporate assistant, had launched a vicious, premeditated assault against a seven-month pregnant woman—who happened to be the daughter of Police Commissioner Gavin Potter.

Worse for Chelsea, her arrogant selfies beside the wrecked SUV—taken as a celebratory trophy of her imagined triumph—were broadcast across national news channels. The internet turned on her overnight. Her social media accounts were flooded with millions of furious comments, her face plastered across viral feeds under the universal moniker: The Corporate Monster.

Inside the county detention facility, Chelsea sat in a stark, fluorescent-lit holding cell, staring in horror at a television monitor mounted on the wall outside her cell block.

She watched herself smiling next to the smashed windshield, watched the anchor break down her financial ties to Jason Sullivan, and realized the terrifying truth: she wasn't a mastermind. She was a disposable pawn in a game she didn't have the intelligence or power to win.

Her attorney hurried into the visiting booth, looking stressed and disheveled.

“Chelsea, we have a massive problem,” her lawyer blurted out before she could even speak. “The D.A. isn't just charging you with felony criminal mischief and stalking. They’ve added hate-motivated destruction of property, conspiracy to commit assault, and federal wire fraud linked to Sullivan’s embezzlement scheme.”

“Embezzlement?!” Chelsea shrieked, slamming her hands against the plastic partition. “Jason told me those accounts were just tax shelters! He said if I helped him move the money, we’d buy a penthouse together once he divorced Emily!”

“Jason is currently singing opera to the federal prosecutors trying to cut a plea deal to save his own skin,” her lawyer replied coldly. “He’s claiming you orchestrated the entire vandalism scheme on your own accord out of ‘jealous obsession.’ He’s throwing you completely under the bus.”

Chelsea stared in absolute silence, the icy reality sinking deep into her bones. The man she had sacrificed her career, her morals, and her freedom for had discarded her the second things went sideways.

Back at the commissioner’s estate, Emily watched the news coverage with a calm, steady heart. She didn't feel joy at their ruin; she felt a profound sense of closure. The lies, the gaslighting, the quiet suffocating tension of her marriage—it was all being swept away by the uncompromising tide of justice.

Her phone buzzed. It was a text message from Detective Guzman: Arraignment is set for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Judge wants both defendants present. Will you be attending, Emily?

Emily looked at her reflection in the dark window glass. She placed a gentle hand on her stomach, feeling a reassuring kick from her daughter.

“Yes,” Emily replied. “I’ll be there.”
