The hospital social worker immediately notified Child Protective Services and the police. However, when the detectives interviewed Margaret at the house, she put on a masterclass in manipulation. Because David backed his mother's story, testifying to her impeccable character, the police hesitated to file immediate criminal charges, viewing it as a tragic domestic accident. Margaret was ordered to leave the house, but she moved into a luxury apartment just ten minutes away, funded entirely by David.
