Chapter 4 - The Lion's DenThe Moretti estate in Westbury, Long Island, was a fortress of limestone, wrought iron, and acres of dense woodland. High stone walls surrounded the perimeter, patrolled by armed security guards and state-of-the-art surveillance equipment.

By three in the morning, the heavy iron gates swung open to admit Lorenzo’s mud-splattered SUV.
Sophie stepped out of the vehicle into the grand courtyard. The rain had slowed to a gentle mist, and the grand estate glowed with warm lights from high arched windows.
Matteo Giordano and Silvio Conti were waiting in the grand foyer as Lorenzo and Sophie walked through the double mahogany doors.
Matteo immediately stepped forward, his head bowed low, looking genuinely remorseful. "Don Lorenzo... Miss Rossellini..."
Sophie stopped, looking at the heavy-set enforcer who had insulted her hours earlier at Levetta.
"Miss Rossellini," Matteo spoke softly, his voice trembling slightly as he lowered himself onto one knee on the marble floor. "I did not know who you were. I used foul language meant for garbage, not for the daughter of Don Vincenzo. I place my life and my honor at your feet."
Sophie looked down at him. In the old country, a Don’s daughter would have ordered his tongue cut out for such disrespect. But Sophie was not a tyrant. She was a Rossellini.
"Get up, Matteo," Sophie said calmly, her voice carrying absolute authority. "A dog that realizes its mistake can still guard the door. But if you ever speak like that to any woman working a honest job again, I will personally see to it that you spend the rest of your days sweeping floors in Queens."
Matteo looked up, relief flooding his eyes. "Thank you, Donna Sophia. Upon my life."
Silvio Conti stepped forward with a warm, respectful nod. "Welcome to the Moretti house, Sophia. Your father was a great man. It is an honor to have his blood under this roof."
"Thank you, Silvio," Sophie replied gracefully.
Lorenzo turned to his housekeeper, an elderly Italian woman named Maria. "Show Sophia to the master guest suite. Ensure she has fresh clothes, warm food, and anything else she requires."
"Right away, Don Lorenzo," Maria bowed gently.
As Sophie turned to follow Maria up the sweeping marble staircase, she looked back over her shoulder. Lorenzo was standing at the foot of the stairs, watching her with a quiet, burning devotion that made her heart race.
"Get some rest, Sophia," Lorenzo said softly. "Tomorrow at noon, the Commission meets in the grand ballroom. Every boss in the five boroughs will be here."
"Including Tomaso Scalia?" she asked.
Lorenzo’s dark eyes flashed with a cold, lethal light. "Especially Scalia."
Two hours later, after a hot shower and a warm meal, Sophie stood in front of the full-length mirror in her suite.
Maria had brought her an exquisite gown from the estate's private wardrobe—a fitted, floor-length dress of deep emerald velvet, featuring a high collar and long sleeves that gave her an regal, ethereal presence. Around her neck hung a simple gold chain bearing her father's signet ring, which rested right over her heart.
A quiet knock sounded at her door.
"Come in," Sophie called out.
The door opened, and Lorenzo stepped inside. He had changed into a fresh, dark charcoal suit with a crisp black shirt. He looked terrifyingly handsome, every inch the powerful Don who commanded the underbelly of Manhattan.
He stopped when he saw her, his breath catching in his throat.
"You look..." Lorenzo began, searching for words, "...like royalty."
Sophie smiled faintly, walking over to the balcony window that overlooked the misty gardens below. "I don't feel like royalty, Lorenzo. I feel like a girl who spent five years clearing plates and worrying about rent."
Lorenzo walked up behind her, standing close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his broad chest.
"You were never just a waitress, Sophia," he said gently, reaching out to stroke a loose lock of dark hair behind her ear. "A title doesn't make a leader. Character does. You survived the massacre of your family. You built a life out of nothing. You faced down my enforcer without flinching, and you saved my life on that roof tonight."
Sophie turned to face him, looking up into his intense brown eyes. "Why are you doing all of this for me, Lorenzo? Is it really just about an old debt to my father?"
Lorenzo looked at her for a long, silent moment. The mask of the cold mafia boss melted away, revealing the raw, honest man beneath.
"At first, it was about honor," Lorenzo admitted softly, his hand dropping to rest gently against her waist. "I thought I was fulfilling an obligation. But tonight... watching you stand up in that restaurant, watching you fight alongside me... I realized something else."
"What?" she whispered, her heart pounding against her ribs.
"I realized that I have been dead inside for five years, Sophia," Lorenzo murmured, stepping closer, his thumb gently tracing her lower lip. "Running this empire, fighting invisible enemies... it meant nothing. But when I look at you, I feel alive again."
Sophie’s breath caught. She didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into his touch, her hands coming up to rest against his firm chest.
"I thought I was alone in the world, Lorenzo," she whispered softly.
"You will never be alone again," Lorenzo promised.
He leaned down and pressed his lips to hers. The kiss was gentle at first, hesitant and full of reverence, before deepening into a passionate, consuming fire that erased five years of cold, lonely nights. Sophie wrapped her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, anchoring herself to the powerful man who had sworn to protect her world.
When they finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, Lorenzo rested his forehead against hers.

"Tomorrow, we take back what is yours," Lorenzo whispered fiercely.
"Together," Sophie replied.
