Chapter 4 - THE WOLF IN THE PENTHOUSEThe penthouse suite of the Thorne Tower loomed six hundred feet above downtown Chicago, its floor-to-ceiling glass windows offering a panoramic view of a city that Victor Thorne believed he owned.

Inside the minimalist, ultra-modern living room, art pieces worth millions hung against stark white walls. But tonight, there was no appreciation for art.

Victor Thorne stood by the glass, holding a crystal tumbler of scotch. At fifty-five, he possessed the silver-haired, charismatic charm of a statesman, his tailored Brioni suit fitting his athletic frame to perfection. But the hand holding the glass was shaking slightly—not from age, but from unadulterated rage.

“Gone?” Thorne’s voice was a soft, dangerous hiss that cut through the silence of the penthouse. “Explain to me how a twelve-man tactical squad fails to secure a dead-drop vault from a dead auditor’s seven-year-old daughter.”

Standing near the private elevator doors was Arthur Vance—no relation to the doctor, but Victor’s chief of internal security—bruised, battered, and standing at attention like a disgraced soldier.

“It wasn't the girl, Mr. Thorne,” Arthur said, his voice strained. “Alfred Christa intercepted us.”

Thorne froze. He slowly turned around, his cold, blue eyes locking onto his security chief. “Alfred Christa. The slug who runs the docks?”

“He’s not a slug, sir. He’s an apex predator. Christa didn't just kill our extraction team at Dock 12—he used the girl’s key to open the vault. He has the ledgers. All of them.”

Thorne set his glass down so hard on the marble coffee table that the crystal stem snapped, spilling amber liquid across the white surface.

“If Christa releases those ledgers to the federal authorities or the press,” Thorne said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying growl, “our entire network—every judge we bought, every shipment we laundered, every political campaign we funded—collapses in forty-eight hours. I will be facing federal execution, and you will be hanging from a meat hook.”

“What are your orders?” Arthur asked.

“We don't wait for him to make the first move,” Thorne said, walking over to his mahogany desk and unlocking a concealed biometric panel. “We strike first. We hit the Christa estate tonight. We take the girl, we take the ledgers back, and we burn that gothic fortress to the ground with everyone inside it.”

“Sir, the Christa estate is a fortress,” Arthur warned. “He has fifty armed guards on permanent rotation, automated defense grids—it’s suicide to storm it frontally.”

“Who said anything about a frontal assault?” Thorne smiled—a cruel, shark-like grin that revealed no warmth. “We don't need to storm it. We have an inside track. Contact the federal task force unit we have under our payroll. Forge a federal emergency search warrant for harboring unregistered illegal combatants and contraband weapons. Send the FBI and a tactical SWAT team through his gates at 3:00 AM under the cover of a federal raid.”

Arthur’s eyes widened in understanding. “A legal siege. Christa can't fight the federal government without starting an open war that will bring the entire National Guard down on his head.”

“Exactly,” Thorne said, picking up his encrypted satellite phone. “Let’s see how much of an underworld king he is when he’s cuffed in federal orange.”
