Chapter 6 - THE DAWN OF GHOST MANORThe sun rising over Lake Michigan painted the winter sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

Inside the executive boardroom of the Thorne Tower, six floors below the penthouse, federal marshals and state police officers stood in absolute silence as they slapped stainless steel handcuffs onto billionaire philanthropist Victor Thorne.
Thorne didn't fight. He didn't yell. He simply stared ahead with the cold, dead eyes of a man who realized his empire had been dismantled not by a rival syndicate, but by a ghost he thought he had buried in an alley.
By noon, the news broke across every major television network in the country: Billionaire Mayoral Candidate Victor Thorne Arrested in Massive International Laundering and Trafficking Ring.
Back at the Christa estate, the atmosphere was entirely different.
The massive iron gates were open, but the heavy security presence had been replaced by the quiet, serene peace of a Sunday morning. Inside the grand kitchen, the air smelled of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, hot cocoa, and woodsmoke.
At the center of the large oak table sat Milla, swinging her legs freely as she used a spoon to eat strawberries from a crystal bowl. Right beside her chair, happily crunching on a plate of custom-made dog biscuits, sat Bruno, his coat brushed to a glossy shine, his cracked rib healing under the care of Dr. Vance.
Alfred sat across from her, drinking his black coffee, reading the morning paper’s front-page headline detailing Thorne’s downfall.
The door to the kitchen opened, and Marcus stepped in, holding a small, official-looking document with a gold foil seal.
“The federal prosecutor’s office just finalized the paperwork, Boss,” Marcus said, laying the document on the table in front of Alfred. “Milla’s guardianship has been legally transferred. Her father’s citizenship records were cleared, and the international warrants against her family have been formally nullified by the State Department.”
Alfred looked down at the paper, then raised his dark eyes to meet Milla’s watchful gaze.
“Does that mean... I can stay here?” Milla asked softly, her spoon pausing halfway to her mouth. “With you? And Bruno?”
Alfred folded the newspaper slowly, setting it aside. He reached across the table, placing his large, tattooed hand over her small, warm fingers.
“You never have to run again, Milla,” Alfred said, his voice unwavering and absolute. “This is your home now. Nobody touches you. Ever.”
Milla’s face broke into the first real, unburdened smile Alfred had ever seen—a bright, radiant flash that chased away the shadows of the dark alley forever. She abandoned her spoon, slid off her chair, and wrapped her small arms around Alfred’s neck, burying her face against his shoulder.
Alfred froze for a fraction of a second—not accustomed to affection, not knowing quite how to hold something so fragile and pure. Then, slowly, his large arms came up, holding her close against his chest.
Bruno let out a happy huff, trotted over, and rested his heavy chin right on Alfred’s polished leather shoe, sealing the pact.

Outside, the snow continued to melt under the rising spring sun, and the city of Chicago moved on, unaware that its true ruler had just found something far more valuable than an empire.
He had found a family.
