Chapter 4 - The Fortress and the UltimatumThe Salvatore estate in Coral Gables was less a house and more a fortified palace hidden behind towering iron gates, lush bougainvillea, and state-of-the-art surveillance turrets.

Inside, however, it felt astonishingly warm. The cavernous marble foyer was softened by plush Persian rugs, warm lighting, and the quiet, efficient hum of a household that operated like clockwork. A gentle, middle-aged housekeeper named Elena immediately took Maya—still half-asleep and clutching her worn rabbit—upstairs to a nursery suite fit for royalty, promising fresh milk and warm blankets.
Clare stood in the expansive, modern kitchen while Nicholas carefully placed Leo into a mahogany crib in the adjacent family room.
When Nicholas returned, he poured two cups of dark, bitter espresso, sliding one across the marble island toward Clare.
“Drink it,” he ordered quietly, leaning against the counter. “You’re shaking.”
Clare wrapped her cold hands around the ceramic mug, letting the heat seep into her skin. “Mr. Salvatore, I appreciate the ride, but I need to call my cousin. I can’t stay here. Richard has a restraining order, but he also has lawyers, and if he finds out I’m hiding out with... with you—”
“He won't find out unless I want him to,” Nicholas cut in, his voice velvet steel. He took a slow sip of his espresso. “Let’s talk about your husband—or rather, your ex-husband in progress.”
Clare stiffened. “How much do you know?”
“I know that Richard Vance has systematically drained your joint accounts, threatened your custody rights, and made it impossible for you to secure legal representation in New York,” Nicholas said, tossing a thick manila folder onto the island counter.
Clare stared at the folder. Inside were bank statements, text logs of Richard’s threats, and legal documents detailing his offshore accounts—documents that her own lawyer had spent months trying to subpoena without success.
“Where did you get this?” she breathed.
“People who owe me favors tend to find paperwork very quickly,” Nicholas replied smoothly. He walked closer, stopping just a few feet away. His gray eyes searched her face with an unsettling intensity. “You saved my son’s life tonight, Clare. On a flight where forty other people looked at him with disgust and annoyance, you stepped up. I don't leave debts unpaid.”
“I didn't do it to collect a favor,” Clare said defensively, her chin lifting. “I’m a mother. I’m a nurse. It’s what I do.”

“And I am a man who protects what matters,” Nicholas countered softly. “Richard Vance is currently sitting in a holding room at Miami International Airport because my security team tipped off federal marshals regarding his undisclosed overseas shell corporations. He won't be bothering you tomorrow. Or next week. Or ever again, if you play your cards right.”
Clare’s breath caught in her throat. The nightmare that had paralyzed her for five years—the constant, suffocating fear of Richard’s control—was being dismantled before her eyes by a man she had met less than four hours ago.
