Chapter 5 - The Gathering StormThree days passed in a blur of surreal safety.

Maya adored the estate, especially the sunlit conservatory filled with orchids and a gentle golden retriever named Bruno who tolerated her endless cuddling. Little Leo, finally sleeping through the night under Clare’s expert routine, had begun flashing toothless, gummy smiles whenever Clare walked into the nursery.

Nicholas spent every spare minute he could in the house, a sight that left his hardened bodyguards whispering in sheer disbelief. The feared mafia boss, a man whose name made rival syndicates sweat in boardrooms across the Eastern Seaboard, was sitting on a plush rug teaching a three-year-old how to build a wooden block tower.

Yet, tension simmered beneath the surface.

On the fourth morning, Victor walked into the study where Nicholas and Clare were reviewing legal briefs with a high-powered family law attorney.

“Boss,” Victor said, his expression grim. “Vance made bail. He’s out. And he’s hired a tabloid reporter. He’s claiming Clare kidnapped Maya and fled the state with a known organized crime syndicate.”

The attorney paled, adjusting his glasses nervously. “If this hits the press, the custody optics will be a disaster. Even with the financial fraud charges, a judge might view her association with—well, with Mr. Salvatore—as hostile.”

Clare felt the room tilt. The warm air in the conservatory suddenly turned freezing. She looked at Nicholas, fear clawing at her chest. “I have to leave. I can’t let my daughter get dragged into your world. I’m just a nurse, Nicholas. If Richard ties me to you, I’ll lose Maya forever.”

Before Nicholas could answer, the heavy oak doors of the study blew open.

There stood Richard, disheveled, sweating, flanked by two local police officers and a camera crew, pointing a trembling finger straight at Clare.

“There she is!” Richard screamed, his face contorted in rage. “That’s my wife! She’s being held hostage by a criminal!”
