Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By midnight, Sarah had relocated Rose, Emma, and Lily to a private residence in coastal Rhode Island owned by her college friend, Victoria Vance. Victoria was a fierce, high-powered family law attorney who had made her career tearing apart the financial defenses of corrupt corporations and abusive high-society elite.
In the sunroom of the coastal house, Victoria sat surrounded by stacks of legal briefs, laptop screens, and landline phones.
Sarah sat on the sofa, watching Lily and Emma sleep peacefully under a thick quilt on the daybed across the room. Their faces were pressed close together, their small fingers intertwined even in sleep.
"The Mitchells have already struck," Victoria said, closing her laptop with a sharp snap. "Robert’s attorneys filed an emergency ex-parte motion in Greenwich family court an hour ago. They're alleging that you kidnapped Lily and suffer from severe postpartum psychosis stemming from a tragic phantom pregnancy six years ago."
Sarah didn't look up from her daughters. "They're trying to make me look crazy."
"It’s Eleanor’s standard playbook," Victoria said. "She owns three judges on the Fairfield County bench. They’re planning to serve you with a custody order at noon tomorrow, demanding the immediate return of Lily to the Belle Haven estate."
"And Emma?"
"They’re ignoring Emma’s existence entirely," Victoria said grimly. "If they acknowledge Emma, they acknowledge the hospital fraud, the falsified birth certificates, and the human trafficking charges that come with it."
Rose walked into the sunroom carrying a tray of chamomile tea. She looked exhausted, her frail shoulders curved inward. "Mrs. Vance... what about me? Will they put me in prison for taking Emma from the hospital?"
Victoria took Rose’s rough hands in her own. "Rose, you saved a child’s life from abandonment. You kept her safe for six years. We are not going to let them touch you. But we need hard, undeniable DNA evidence before we file our counter-suit."
"I brought something," Sarah said.
She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out two sterile collection swabs provided by a private genetics lab in Boston.
"I took cheek swabs from both girls this evening," Sarah said. "I also took a brush containing Robert’s hair from our bathroom before I left the house."
Victoria’s eyes lit up with tactical brilliance. "A comparative tri-sample DNA test. If the lab proves that Emma and Lily are monozygotic identical twins—sharing ninety-nine point nine percent of their genetic profile—and that Robert Mitchell is the biological father of both, Eleanor’s 'phantom pregnancy' story collapses in an instant."
"How fast can we get the results?" Sarah asked.
"I’m having a private courier fly the samples to the GenTech testing facility in Cambridge right now," Victoria said, picking up her phone. "We’ll have certified results in eighteen hours."
Suddenly, the headlights of three large black SUVs swept across the windows of the coastal house.
Tires crunched heavily on the gravel driveway outside.
Rose gasped, stepping back into the shadow of the hallway. "They found us."
Sarah stood up, her instincts sharpening instantly. She walked to the window and pulled back the curtain.
Four men in dark suits stepped out of the vehicles. Leading them was Richard Sterling, the Mitchell family’s chief corporate fixer and private head of security—a retired federal agent known for making inconvenient people disappear behind legal non-disclosure agreements and institutional stays.
Sterling walked up to the front porch and rang the doorbell.
Victoria looked at Sarah. "Stay here with the girls. Let me handle this."
Victoria walked to the foyer and pulled the heavy oak door open, leaving the brass security chain latched. "Can I help you?"
Sterling stood on the porch, his hand resting inside his coat pocket. "Ms. Vance. We know Sarah Mitchell is inside with her daughter, Lily. We have an emergency court order granting temporary custody to Robert Mitchell. Open the door and hand over the child, or my men will enter the premises under state marshal authorization."
Victoria smiled—a sharp, cold smile that held no fear.
"Mr. Sterling," Victoria said smoothly. "This property is located in Washington County, Rhode Island. Your Fairfield County, Connecticut ex-parte order has zero jurisdictional validity across state lines without a signed governor’s extradition warrant. Furthermore, this entire perimeter is currently under live satellite audio and video surveillance fed directly to the Rhode Island State Police headquarters three miles down the road."
Sterling’s expression hardened. "Ms. Vance, you are interfering in a private family matter involving individuals with unlimited resources."
"And you are standing on private property committing felony harassment," Victoria fired back. "If your boots are still on this gravel in sixty seconds, I will have the State Police arrest you and your men for crossing state lines to commit kidnapping."
Sterling stared at Victoria for three long seconds, measuring the threat. He realized he was dealing with an attorney who knew the exact boundaries of the law.

He stepped back slowly, pulling out his phone. "This isn't over, Ms. Vance. Eleanor Mitchell does not lose."
"Tell Eleanor," Sarah’s voice rang out from the shadow of the entryway behind Victoria, "that I’m coming for her kingdom."
