Chapter 4 - The Court of Whispers

Forty-eight hours later.
The Fairfield County Superior Courthouse in Bridgeport, Connecticut, was swarming with news reporters, camera crews, and private security guards.
News of the secret Mitchell twin had leaked to the New York Post at 6:00 AM—a leak strategically executed by Victoria Vance. The headline read: THE STOLEN TWIN OF BELLE HAVEN: HEDGE FUND DYNASTY ACCUSED OF ABANDONING NEWBORN.
Eleanor Mitchell arrived in a black Bentley, flanked by a team of six defense attorneys dressed in tailored dark suits. She wore a black silk coat and large sunglasses, walking past the shouting reporters with her chin held high, treating the media like an unpleasant odor. Robert walked behind her, his head bowed, dodging the flashing cameras.
Inside Courtroom 3B, the atmosphere was thick with tension.
Judge Arthur Pendelton sat at the bench. He was an older man with thin white hair and dark eyes—a judge whose campaign funds had been quietly supported by the Mitchell Charitable Trust for over a decade.
"This court is now in session," Judge Pendelton announced, banging his gavel. "We are here to address the emergency custody motion filed by Mr. Robert Mitchell against Mrs. Sarah Mitchell."
The Mitchell family’s lead attorney, Arthur Croft, stood up. "Your Honor, my client requests the immediate return of his daughter, Lily Mitchell. Mrs. Mitchell has absconded with the child, engaged in a campaign of public defamation, and aligned herself with an unstable woman holding an unrelated child in an attempt to extort the Mitchell estate."
"An unrelated child?" Victoria Vance’s voice cut through the courtroom like a razor.
Victoria stood up from the defense table, holding a thick, gold-stamped binder.
"Your Honor," Victoria said, walking toward the bench. "I hold in my hand the certified DNA analysis report from the GenTech Forensic Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, signed by Dr. Elizabeth Chen, Chief of Medical Genetics."
Croft jumped up. "Objection! This evidence was obtained without court authorization!"
"Overruled," Judge Pendelton said coldly, though his eyes flickered with deep anxiety as he looked at Eleanor Mitchell sitting in the front row. "Let me see the report."
Victoria handed the binder to the bailiff, who passed it to the judge.
"The test proves two absolute scientific facts," Victoria declared, her voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "First, six-year-old Emma Winters and six-year-old Lily Mitchell share ninety-nine point nine percent of their DNA. They are monozygotic identical twins. Second, Robert Mitchell is the biological father of both children with a ninety-nine point nine nine percent probability."
A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Reporters scribbled frantically in their notebooks.
Robert Mitchell placed his head in his hands at the prosecution table, letting out a low, pathetic groan.
"Furthermore," Victoria continued, slamming a second folder onto the podium, "we have submitted a sworn affidavit from Nurse Margaret Williams, detailing the night of October 14th, six years ago, at Westbrook Memorial Hospital. Nurse Williams confirms under penalty of perjury that Eleanor Mitchell ordered the concealment of Baby B’s live birth, forged the death certificate, and attempted to transfer the infant to an unauthorized party."
Judge Pendelton’s face went pale as he read the scientific markers in the report. Even his long-standing loyalty to the Mitchell family could not protect them against ironclad genetic proof broadcast to the national press.
"Mrs. Mitchell," Judge Pendelton said, turning his gaze toward Sarah, who sat at the defense table dressed in a crisp navy suit, holding herself with remarkable dignity. "Where are the children currently?"
"They are in a safe, private location under child protective care, Your Honor," Sarah said clearly. "And I am requesting full legal and physical custody of both Lily and Emma, a permanent restraining order against Eleanor and Robert Mitchell, and the immediate freezing of all joint accounts pending criminal fraud investigations."
Eleanor Mitchell suddenly stood up from her bench, her face twisted in a mask of regal fury. "This is an outrage! That woman is a common schoolteacher! She has no right to tear apart a family line that has built this state for three generations!"
"Sit down, Mrs. Mitchell!" Judge Pendelton warned, banging his gavel with genuine force. "One more outburst from the gallery and I will have you removed by bailiffs!"
Eleanor glared at the judge, realizing in that chilling moment that her money could no longer control the room. The truth had burst into the light, and the walls of her protected world were crumbling around her.
"In light of the genetic evidence presented," Judge Pendelton ruled, his voice shaking slightly, "I am denying Mr. Mitchell’s motion for custody. Temporary full custody of Lily Mitchell is awarded to Sarah Mitchell. Furthermore, I am issuing a temporary protective order barring Robert and Eleanor Mitchell from coming within one thousand feet of Sarah Mitchell, Lily Mitchell, Emma Winters, or Rose Winters."
The courtroom erupted into commotion.
Sarah closed her eyes, letting out a long, quiet breath as Victoria wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

"We won the first battle," Victoria whispered.
"No," Sarah said, opening her eyes and looking directly at Eleanor Mitchell, who was being hustled out the side door by her security detail. "We’re going to win the war."
