Chapter 1 - The Return to the House of GlassThe predawn air was biting as Daniel and his father, Pop, sat in the cab of Pop’s truck, the engine idling in the quiet driveway of the suburban home. Inside the house, a single light burned upstairs in what was once Ethan’s bedroom—now Marissa’s private office.

Daniel stared at the steering wheel, his knuckles white. The wedding ring he had just removed sat on the dashboard like a small, cold monument to a shattered life.
"She told me she moved his things because he needed a change of scenery," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of raw grief and blinding fury. "She told me he wanted to sleep downstairs near the playroom. I believed her, Pop. I was working double shifts, trusting her while she... while she put my son in a freezing garage."
"You couldn't have known, Daniel," Pop said gently, placing a heavy hand on his son’s shoulder. "Marissa is a master of manipulation. But now we go in there, we get the rest of Ethan’s things, and we make sure she understands this is over."
They stepped out of the truck and walked up the front steps. Daniel didn't knock; he used his own house key, the metal turning with a crisp click that echoed in the foyer.
Marissa appeared at the top of the stairs, draped in her silk robe, a cup of steaming chamomile tea in her hand. Her expression shifted from annoyance to unease as she saw Daniel standing there at five-thirty in the morning, his paramedic uniform rumpled and his face grim.
"Daniel? Why are you home early?" she asked, her voice dropping into an affected, sweet register. "And what is your father doing here at this hour?"
Daniel didn't answer right away. He walked up the stairs, stopping just a few steps away from her. The scent of the scented candle burning in Ethan’s old room drifted into the hallway—the same candle Pop had seen sitting on the shelf above her glass desk.
"Where is Ethan's winter coat, Marissa?" Daniel asked quietly.
"What?" She frowned, crossing her arms defensively. "It's in the hall closet. Why are you interrogating me? Is this about your father barging in here the other night? I told you, it was temporary—"
Daniel pulled his phone from his pocket, tapped the screen, and pressed play.
The tinty, chilling audio filled the stairwell. “Marissa said I wake the babies up. She said Mason and Lily need real rooms because they’re little.” Then, the silence of the garage. And finally, Ethan’s heartbreaking, exhausted whisper: “Am I bad, Pop?”
Marissa’s face drained of every trace of color. The tea mug in her hand trembled, liquid sloshing over the rim. "Where... where did you get that?" she stammered, her mask instantly dissolving into panicked defensiveness. "Your father twisted everything! Ethan exaggerates, he’s always looking for attention, and—"
"Shut up," Daniel roared, a sound so fierce and absolute that it silenced her instantly. "You put our nine-year-old son with cerebral palsy on a beach towel in a forty-one-degree concrete garage because you wanted an office for your online boutique! You left him in the freezing cold while my step-children slept in heated bedrooms!"

"It was just a few nights!" she shrieked, tears of frustration springing to her eyes as she realized her narrative was entirely destroyed. "You don't understand how stressful it is running a house with two toddlers while you're off playing hero in an ambulance!"
"You're done," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute calm. "The police have the report, Child Protective Services has been notified by my father, and my lawyer is filing emergency custody papers this morning. Pack your bags, Marissa. Or I'll have the deputies carry them out for you."
