Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of WarmthSpring arrived in New York with a rush of green shoots and warm sunlight, transforming the atmosphere inside Pop’s house and Daniel’s newly leased apartment.

Daniel had resigned from his grueling paramedic schedule, taking a lower-stress position as a corporate safety director that allowed him to be home every evening by five o'clock. He and Pop had spent weeks transforming the second bedroom of the apartment into a sanctuary specifically designed for Ethan.
The walls were painted navy blue, dotted with hand-painted glowing stars that shone softly in the dark—an exact recreation of the room Marissa had stolen from him. A custom orthopedic bed sat against one wall, and beside it, a polished wooden stand held Ethan’s leg braces neatly and proudly, rather than being shoved against a plastic bin.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, Ethan sat at his new low desk, carefully coloring a superhero drawing while classical music played softly from a stereo.
Daniel walked in carrying a plate of sliced strawberries and cheese. He set it down gently, smiling as Ethan looked up.
"How are the legs feeling today, buddy?" Daniel asked, pulling up a chair.
"Good, Daddy!" Ethan beamed, his speech clearer and stronger now that the chronic cold-induced spasticity had receded with proper physical therapy and warmth. "Dr. Alpert said my muscle tone is way better. And look, I drew Pop fighting a villain!"
Daniel laughed, looking at the enthusiastic crayon strokes. "Pop is definitely going to frame this. He loves it."
Ethan’s smile faltered just a fraction, his crayon pausing over the paper. He looked down, his small fingers fidgeting with the edge of the desk.
"Daddy?"
"Yes, Ethan?"
"Am I... am I ever going to see Marissa again?"
Daniel’s heart clenched, but he kept his expression calm and reassuring. He reached out, placing his hand over Ethan’s small fingers.
"No, Ethan. You won't. Marissa made choices that hurt you, and the court agreed that you never have to be around her again. You are safe here with me and Pop. Nobody will ever make you sleep in a cold garage again. You are never, ever in the way."
Ethan looked up into his father’s eyes, searching for any sign of doubt. Finding only absolute, unwavering love, the boy threw his arms around Daniel’s neck, burying his face in his shoulder.

"I love you, Daddy," Ethan whispered.
"I love you more than life itself, son," Daniel replied, closing his eyes as a wave of profound peace washed over him.
