Chapter 3 - The Diagnosis of Cruelty

Dr. Harrison worked quickly, examining Lily’s back under the bright lights of the master bedroom while Michael held a now-calm Noah. The results were sickening.
"The soft tissue damage along her lumbar spine and thoracic vertebrae is severe, Michael," Dr. Harrison reported, his face grave as he adjusted his glasses. "A child’s skeleton is still forming. Forcing her to carry twenty-five pounds for consecutive ten-hour days while performing physical labor has caused acute muscular tearing and early signs of spinal compression. If this had gone on for another week, she could have suffered permanent skeletal deformities."
Michael’s fist clenched so hard his knuckles turned white. "What about Noah?"
"Noah is physically fine, just dehydrated and highly stressed from picking up on the trauma in the house," the doctor replied, writing out a prescription for physical therapy and specialized pediatric care for Lily. "But Michael... this isn't negligence. This is systematic cruelty. Lily told the nurse that Rachel threatened to send her away to a boarding school in Europe if she ever told you what was happening during your business trips."
The depth of the psychological warfare Rachel had waged on his daughter left Michael physically sick. He realized that his obsession with building his empire had blinded him to the viper he had let into his home after his first wife passed away. Rachel didn't want a family; she wanted his wealth, his status, and she viewed his children as obstacles to be controlled or broken.

By midnight, Rachel had left the property in an upscale car service, but the true battle was just beginning. At 2:00 a.m., Michael’s phone rang. It was Marcus Vance, the head of the board of directors at Bennett Logistics.
"Michael, we have a massive problem," Marcus said, his voice tense. "An anonymous source just leaked an encrypted legal filing to the media. Rachel is filing for emergency custody of Noah and alleging that you are the one who is unstable and abusive, using your corporate wealth to isolate her and lock your children away. Our stock futures are already dropping."
