Chapter 2 - Breach of the FortressThe drive to Belle Meade usually took twenty-five minutes, but today Richard cut it down to fifteen, navigating the winding suburban lanes with the calculated aggression of a tank commander maneuvering through hostile territory.

When he reached Caldwell Manor, the grand iron gates stood firmly closed. A sleek black security call box blinked with a blue LED light. Richard didn't bother pressing the intercom button. He knew from local property records and his own investigative instincts that Ethan Caldwell had integrated his home security system with a private monitoring firm downtown—any call made from the gate would give Ethan minutes of advance warning to clean up whatever fresh nightmare was unfolding inside.

Richard parked his truck a hundred yards down the road beneath a dense canopy of oak trees, killing the headlights and engine. He stepped out into the humid, thickening air, zipped his jacket tight, and moved with surprising, silent agility toward the side perimeter wall.

Years of tactical training in rough terrain made scaling a ten-foot brick perimeter wall look effortless. Using a thick overhang of ivy for grip, Richard hoisted himself over the top, dropping soundlessly onto the damp mulch of the estate's sprawling rear gardens.

The house was enormous—a three-story limestone mansion wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass and guarded by motion-activated exterior cameras. Richard ducked beneath the sweep of the security lenses, hugging the exterior stone walls until he reached a secluded side patio hidden behind a row of towering boxwood hedges.

He pulled the master lockpicks from his pocket, kneeling before a heavy glass-paneled french door that led directly into the back study. With a few practiced, delicate clicks, the internal deadbolt gave way with a soft, metallic thunk.

Richard slipped inside, closing the door behind him without a sound.

The interior of the mansion smelled of expensive cedar, high-end espresso, and faint copper—the unmistakable, metallic scent of fresh blood. Richard’s chest tightened, every parental instinct screaming for him to rush forward, but his military discipline forced him to freeze, listen, and assess.

From upstairs, muffled through the thick Persian rugs and mahogany doors, came a voice that made his blood run cold.

It wasn't Emily screaming anymore. It was Ethan’s voice—smooth, chillingly calm, and dripping with venom.

"...you think your daddy is coming to save you, you ungrateful little bitch? Look at you. You’re nothing without me. Absolutely nothing."

Richard didn't wait another second. He drew a deep, steadying breath, gripped the banister of the grand staircase, and began to climb.
