Chapter 3 - The Monster Behind the MaskUpstairs, the master bedroom suite resembled a pristine museum exhibit turned chamber of horrors.

Emily Hayes-Caldwell sat huddled against the base of a custom mahogany king-sized bed, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees, her white silk blouse torn at the shoulder and stained with dark crimson. Her face was pale, her left cheek swollen and discolored by a brutal, blossoming bruise.

Standing over her was Ethan Caldwell. At thirty-five, he cut a striking figure in tailored designer trousers and an unbuttoned linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up to reveal muscular forearms. To the business world, he was a visionary tech genius who donated millions to children's hospitals. To Emily, he was a cage from which there was no escape.

"Get up," Ethan snapped, his voice dropping into a harsh, clinical whisper as he kicked a designer stiletto shoe across the hardwood floor. "We have guests arriving for a charity gala on Tuesday night. I will not have you looking like a battered street urchin and ruining months of public relations work. Fix your makeup, apologize for your hysterics, and tell your father—if he ever has the audacity to call here again—that you fell down the stairs."

Emily looked up through tear-swollen eyes, her voice trembling but filled with a sudden, defiant spark. "I called him, Ethan. He heard everything. And he's coming."

Ethan let out a sharp, arrogant laugh, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair. "Your father? That retired old fossil living out in his dusty cabin? What’s he going to do, file a noise complaint? I employ the best legal team in Tennessee, Emily. I own half the municipal judges in Davidson County. If your father sets foot on this property, I’ll have him arrested for trespassing before he reaches the front fountain."

Before Emily could reply, a heavy, measured knock echoed through the quiet master suite.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

It wasn't a nervous knock. It was the deliberate, rhythmic pounding of someone who owned the space they stood in.

Ethan froze, his smirk faltering for a fraction of a second. He turned his head toward the double entryway doors of the suite. "Who’s down there?" he shouted irritably. "Housekeeping is off on Sundays!"

The doorknob slowly began to turn.

The heavy oak door swung inward, revealing the tall, broad-shouldered silhouette of Richard Hayes.

The retired Colonel didn't shout. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply stepped across the threshold, his piercing gray eyes locking onto Ethan Caldwell with a cold, terrifying intensity that made the tech billionaire take an involuntary step backward.

"Good afternoon, Ethan," Richard said, his voice quiet, steady, and vibrating with suppressed fury. "We need to talk."
